Just started having this problem. When trying to start starter will spin but will not engage. When looking at it with cover off I can see that the gear is not comming up to engage. If i tap on it, it will engage.
Could it be that it is not lubricated properly and if so what kind of lubricant should I use? Or do I have another problem?
I hate having to pull the cover each time to start the engine and it's bad enough that I have a Force I get those looks everytime at the ramp.

Hey trollhole,
Seems to be a common problem with Force starters. It's a lack of lubrication on the shaft the gear rides up & down on. Clean it up and lube it lightly with any quality lube. Many folks use TCW-III on the shaft. You'll need to do it several times during a season. :)
Backlash

Hey trollhole. I know exactly how you feel. I got a 87 force motor and have had the same problem. I ended up putting a brass sleeve around shaft that drive falls against to hold it out a little and give it a little more ledge to butt up against. Where thinking drive gets worn a little and gets cocked and won't let it go up shaft. Seems to be working. But I'm sure lubricate doesn't hurt either.

I had a similar problem. I couldn't get the gear to engage at all though. I ordered a brush kit for $20 and took the starter apart and replaced the brushes and cleaned the connects on the bottom of the electro magnet. I put it back together and worked like a charm.

P.M. is one of the most important tools in your box.
Regular lube or spray with WD or a silicone spray on everything under the cover.
The worst thing for an outboard is letting it set.
You might get looks at the ramp but at least your at the ramp.
There are MILLIONS of those older Chryslers still running. They are easy to work on,cheap and the parts for the most part can still be found.J
