Re: 1995 force 70hp to pee or not to pee

Force made simple , inexpensive, and reliable engines. They run VERY dirty. The newest models are 1999 models. I have two,the newest of which is a 1990 model, which bears this out ...At least it does to me.
These engines would still be made today, if the feds didn't "Force" Mercury's hand.
The feds tightened-up the emissions standards as of January,2000. To make a Force (basicly a late-60's design) meet these new standards, would've meant massive, costly retooling. Seeinz how Merc allready maufactured the Merc/Mariner line, they simply dropped the Force line.
Now, as to the problem you are having, I'll have to make an educated guess, because that is just too wierd. If it were my baby,I'd drain the lower unit, and look for water in the lube. Probable cause if found, would be the shift shaft seal has failed.
Also, if you find water, now would be a good time to change out the impeller. This is a job which should be performed every 2 years under normal conditions. Some true weekend warriors must change it out evey year. This is normal,as the impeller is rubber, and wears-out like a 2ply tire on an SUV.
But again, nothing wrong with Force, over any other engine made..Like Chevies and Fords (give me a Chevy any day), folks have thier preferances. Mine are Yammaha or Merc...But hey, why fix what aint broke? I'd drve a Ford if the price was right, and it didn't make me late fer werk.

thanks for the reply 12footer, this boat and motor were used when i aquired them last august, the first thing i did was change the lower unit lube. it was in good shape, no water evidence, and i have have changed it twice this year just for general maintainence,(im a fanatic, take care of her, she'll take care of you) no evidence of water. could it be that the prop is pulling air down while in reverse and an air pocket is forming? i dont have a clue????

You got me, man. LOL your theory is as good as any other. Is the cavitation plate under water usually? It sounds logical, for sure.

12 footer is right on the money, you have to baby this motor ,and take care of it ,my 1994 120hp. was taking on water like a blender ,turn out the upper shaft seal.took about 20min. to change ,and the old merc. stator they eat them like candy, otherwise no major problems, can change them now like a pro. ;) ;)
