I have a couple problems. I have a chrysler 140hp engine, model # 1408HOC Serial # 1319
but I dont know the year, or the oil to gasoline mixture ratio. The boat was given to me.
I am also having a problem with the engine. At low speeds it runs ok. When I give it more throttle, the boat jerks every 4 to 5 seconds. The more throttle I give, the jerks come every 2 to 3 seconds apart. Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum,Beaz. What do you mean by jerking? Does it act like a slipping clutch on a car, or like the motor is sneezing?

It feels like driving along with a rope tied to your bumper then the slack in the rope is gone and the boat jerks. Or like you just ran over something big in the water. It makes a sizable noise when it happens.

Check the compression and the coils..sounds like your losing a cylinder.

AHA! There's a goos chance the hub has spun in the prop, by your description (with the rope and all). It's ither that, or gear trouble. But the weakest link is the hub of the prop. A prop shop will rehub it for 30-45 buks.

Beaz20
Just by what you describe I belive it,s more than likly the clutch dogs are slipping off the ramps on the foward gear. Will it do the same thing in reverse? If it don,t do it in reverse then it,s probly the above or your shift linkage is out of adjustment.
Just a thought
