I have an '89 Force 9.9 that is extremely difficult to shift (any gear). Once in gear the motor runs fine. I had to use so much force on the shift lever that the small roll pin in the linkage broke. I would like to fix the cause of the hard shifting before I replace the roll pin. The previous owner told me that the motor had been in storage for about 7 years before I bought it. I also have an early 70's Chrysler 7.5 that does the same thing. Both motors were built by the same company, and have the same basic design. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Hard Shifting Force 9.9

Corm,

Thanks for the reply. I changed the lower unit grease when I bought the motor. On the Chrysler 7.5, I changed it twice... once when I first got the motor, and again after I ran it for the first time and discovered it needed an impeller. Thanks again - Geoff

Re: Hard Shifting Force 9.9

Hi nitramag,
The shift cam ha a steep ramp on that motor.
If a small wear spot develops from a lot of use the shift pin can hang and make it shift hard. I have seen in extreem cases where the shift cam has wore a grove in the housing
cuasing the same problem. These problems were made worse if the LUs had water in them.
the shift pin would wear flat on the end then.
Check the shift inter lock with the stator plate to see if the idle speed may be set to high and the inter lock is hitting the stop on the stator plate just under the flywheel.
OH ya if a new shift shaft seal has been put in lately it maybe to thick and when compressed will nearly lock up the shift.
...have fun...corm
