G'Day from down under!! I'm writing from Darwin, Northern Territory, AUSTRALIA.
My motor has started playing up. 1991 5 cylinder Force 150, cuts out after about 1/2 hour (motor hot, but not overheating), no spark at all. I have checked all the wiring to and from the motor. I would appreciate a wiring diagram or any advice on the cause. Plenty more info on the engine if required,
Regards, Budgie

Re: FORCE 150 Cuts Out

G'day, Budgie. I think you may have a "hot short". . .a component that fails when hot but otherwise operates properly.

To locate the offending part (probably a powerpack, but might also be a trigger or coil) use a hair dryer to heat up the parts while the engine idles. Heat one part at a time and give it time to cool a bit before heating the next suspect.

This procedure is not foolproof, but does work most of the time.

Good luck, mate.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: FORCE 150 Cuts Out

Had a similar problem with a 1991 150 I owned. Sometimes the spark would totally stop, then a week later it would run perfect. Resulted in a $300 tow for me. My problem did not seem only triggerred by temperature.

My engine was a J model, they changed the ignition system mid year so you will need to know exactly what you have. Mine had a switchbox and a converter. I replaced the switchbox after testing it when it was in a non working mood. This solved the problem. Mail order from Kenyon Powerboats was $205 for the switchbox.

Now, the Force factory manual is incorrect in how to troubleshoot the ignition I had, the aftermarket manuals are incorrect also as they are copied basically from the Force. If you follow the directions, it can result in identifying both the switchbox and converter as bad, even if only one is. I discussed this with a Force factory tech and he agreed with me. The Force manual explains how the ignition system works in detail, and understanding this is needed to understand how the troubleshooting should proceed.

I dont recall all the details, but a note I made in my manual says to first check the switchbox signal to the converter (violet/white) wire. Also the output voltage from converter is checked on the blue wire, not the red wire that the manuals say.
