tiller problems, one last try for help.

I have a 1969 9.9hp chrysler that I just inherited. Their are two gears on the underside of the tiller, one which is linked to the hand control, and the one it is geared with which is attatched to the throttle on the engine. When you turn the hand control, the gear associated with it won't turn the other gear, it just raises itself above the other and spins. The gear linked to the motor throttle isn't really bound up so I have no idea what the problem is. I bought a clymer repair manual and it doesn't address the tiller at all. My other question is that if by your help I fix this problem, how do I set the control handle where it is supposed to be since it is currently frespinning. I am a rookie to boat motor repair and need as much help as possible.

Is it possible that the cogs have slipped and the one associated with the throttle linkage is already turned to its furtherest point?? Look at the throttle plate and see if it isn't open. Let me know what you find.

I'm sorry, I'm new to all of this and I don't really know what a "cog" is. If it is the bar with the gear on the end of it, then no it hasn't been turned to it's furthest point. I can manually turn it in both directions by working the throttle plate by hand. Thank you for your helping me through this, I can't wait to get on the water but can't really afford to give it to a mechanic.

so, you've gotten it fixed? Some engines have a friction lock for the throttle on them. Have you checked to see if this might be the case with yours??

Well, it's not fixed. I just know that the gear linked to the motor isn't bound up, it will turn. The gear coming from the hand feed is still slipping. It won't turn the lower gear and simply pushes itself above the teeth on the other gear when you try to turn the hand feed. I haven't tried anything with the friction lock, I guess I really don't know where it is at or what it does. Thanks again for staying with me on this.

I'm not sur if it has a lock or not thats just a thought....ya think maybe that a pin on the gear in the handle might have sheared or something? Are the gears meshing fully?

The gears seem to fit together pretty well. I have to go out of town this afternoon through friday so I'll check a little closer for a sheared pin or something else that is broken. I guess I'll add a reply on monday to let you know what I found, so please check in on me again monday.

Thanks

sounds to me like there is a bushen/shim/bearing....? that is either gone or worn bad. That would allow the gears/shaft on tiller handle to move about and around the other gears. Sounds to me like the problem is in the tiller handle.

Claden...on my small Chrysler there is a cap and 2 screws that hold the plastic gear down...my guess is that you would have to be missing those parts for the gear to move anywhere...I can email you a parts breakdown if you like...just a Thought

Thanks for all of the replies, from what you all have said it looks like I probably have some broken or missing pieces. I won't be able to check for sure until this weekend, but please check up on me again monday for a "tiller update". I would appreciate any parts info you could send me "Thought101", e-mail info to claden23@hotmail.com

thanks again :p

Re: tiller problems, one last try for help.

Hey everybody,

I took a really close look at the tiller, and it doesn't look as if anything is broken or missing. I tried to take the entire tiller handle off but was unable to break one of the screws loose. I put some WD-40 on it hoping that it would help; it hasn't so far. I don't know what the problem is but if all else fails I guess I'm going to have to break down and bring it in. I did pull the lower end off this weekend and took the impeller out. Believe it or not this 1969 chrysler motor has been sitting in a garage for 15-20 years and the impeller wasn't the least bit brittle or rotten. I am still going to try and replace it if I can find somebody who carries it. I also checked the oil in the lower end and it is black as can be without any milky coloring. I guess that I probably got pretty lucky in finding this motor, it is probably going to be a little gem..........If I can fix the tiller handle.
