I wish for good or bad information on this boat. the boat hall is in fantastic shape no major gouges or cracks, interior is like it has either been under cover at night or in a shop all the time. I also worry about the 1985 force 85 hp motor has been rebuilt in the past present owner does not know when, he has only replace starter/generator at top of motor. This will be my first boat it is at a great price so I do not really care to much about the engine, just reputation on it this web page is full of info, and it seems there are a lot of people that have good ideas. greatly appreciate you reading and your info. check back tomorrow about 8:00 p.m. :D

I personally would pass. Bayliner's back then were not the best and Force is not my favorite. (Some will dissagree).

Not me, Trent. I agree. I admire your restraint.

1dog4: The reputation of early '80s B'liners AND Forces is not quite as good as YUGOs.

It is possible that this one has been well carred for and would be a good buy, it just isn't very likely. If you ever wanted to sell it you would be in trouble.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Sorry if that offends you, Way577. The man asked for information, we gave him the TRUE REPUTATION of early B'liners AND of Force engines.

You may have a good one and take good care of it. If so I congratulate you. There were some good Yugos, too.

NO WAY am I gonna feed a new boater asking for help any elephant dung about what great boats and engines that combo is.

Cool off and go have a beer on me.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: info on 84 bayliner bassboat w/force 1985 85hp

Idog:
I got a 87 bayliner w/125 Force and it was in excellant shape when I got it 4 years ago and is still today. I just kind of follow what 12footer and foulplug and the other guys on this board say about the regular maintenance each year. And stick to it. And we've have had a blast with it.
I figured I bought it cheap enough that when the motor goes I'll put a new 125 Mercury on it. Because I know the motor isn't worth a dime now and the new merc. when the time comes will be worth more than the boat.
But I like the boat and its paid for. So you kinda got to go with what you feel you can afford. Who knows maybe with this kind of attitude the motor will last long enough to get other things paid for and be able to buy a new boat and motor.
But a guys got to live within his means. And god sure didn't make me able to walk on water to go catch them fish. I'm sure you'll make the right decision. :p

Idog4:
I guess I should of mention that the bayliner I got is the bassboat with just the single console with two livewells. Is that similar to what your looking at? :)

one last cast it is about a 16footer 2 live wells 2 shieled seats w/stand up seating and plenty of storage for its size I'am looking foward to taking owner ship of this Sunday, and taking the boy fishing ;) and taking the kid for rowing power :D but really I have checked and you can pick up rebuilt motors for it around 2000.00 yes more than purchase price but yet all total the price will be just above the sellable price. Hey my wife also has family in Toledo and Desmoines and one of the cousins is a professional fisherman tourney style. :)

Idog4: I kind of figure the way your post read that it was pretty close to sitting in your driveway. Like I said earlier we've had a blast with ours. My 12 year old has got some good memories with it and so do I. They can't take them away. Even the wife agrees now that its been well worth it and she doesn't agree with me very often. We run it all over the Mississippi in our area. Like I said stay after the maintenace part though. I'll have to see if I can find that things to do list that I think 12footer had in one of the earlier post that I copied and I'll put it on here for you. I guess I feel everything is going to break sooner or later but hopefully if a guy takes care of it.
I don't know why it shouldn't last. One thing that I do that the guy told me to do that I bought it from was to make sure to change the T-stat and impeller every other year and to put premium gas in it. Now he always ran it a little heavier on oil then what it calls for. 16oz. of Mercury oil to 5gals. of gas with 1oz. of Mercury Quickkleen gas additive. Now your going to get all kinds of different things people say to do. But I figured this guy should know his boat so after 10 years why should I change the way he took care of it. This guy that happen to own this boat was my supervisor. So basically I new what all he had done to it and how he took care of it. So also talk with the guy that owned it and do the same. I'll see if I can get that thing to do list posted for you. Also invest in a manual. I would of never attempted to change the impeller or even the t-stat a couple of years back. Not that I'm any kind of mechanic now. But with the help of these guys on this board I can say that I've really learned alot. Its got some really great people. So you enjoy and stay safe fishing.

Re: info on 84 bayliner bassboat w/force 1985 85hp

1dog4 heres that thing to do list that I dug up:
It needs decarbing every 60hours. I like the spray type, such as Quicksilver' "powertune",ValveTect "Outboard Decarb Cleaner", or OMC's seafoam spray.
Follow directions on the can.
Drain/inspect/refill lower unit lube every 60hours. Use new vent/fill screw gaskets each time.
Every season, remove prop, clean and grease spline.
Every other season, whether it needs it or not, replace the impeller.
Inspect inline fuel filter for debris before or after each outing.
Grease all fittings every 20-30 hours. After washing your boat and trailer down after each outing, wipe the steering pin clean, and coat with oil,or spray with WD40 on a rag.
Inspect the terminal buss at the engine for any signs of corrosion when you decarb. The least little bit of green or white growth will kill the finicky HVIS box.
Clean the fuel tanks every season.
pull tstat and inspect every 80 hours, or when you change the impeller, change the tstat.
Look for visable signs of minute water leakage at the exaust port plate(manifold). These will appear as a light brown line down the side of the block.
Pull plugs when you decarb, and inspect for overly clean-looking plug , esspecially #1 cyclinder.
Have another set of plugs, as these engines burn them out in 80 hours or so. But if you find one that is clean, white porcelin,it may be leaking water into that cylinder, and this is the engine's weak point, the exaust port gasket. The plugs should be black in color after even short useage.
durring this inspection, get a flashlight, and look under the flywheel at the wires cmming down from the stator. These are known to develop enough slack in them to make contact with the spinning flywheel. If it wears-thru the insulation, the stator will crash and burn. That's about all that comes to mind right now. I'll add to this if my brain ever comes home.

Howdy, Way577.
There are many B'liners out there because:
1.They are very pretty boats.
2.They are very inexpensive boats, compared to others of the same size and power.
3. There are many buyers who don't know how to evaluate a boat, so they buy the cheap, pretty one. According to J.D. Power, most of them really regret it.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: info on 84 bayliner bassboat w/force 1985 85hp

Sometimes, the truth hurts . I own a bayliner 1650Capri. It IS a pretty boat. It was a cheap boat new, compared to other same-sized new.
Before buying this boat, look in the anchor box in the bow, for rot. Walk heavily on every inch of decking. Open the battery box between the seats, and inspect the hatch, and the hole it came out of. These boats used plywood for decking, and wood for bukheads. The problem here is, the fiberglass (shot-on with a chopper gun), was NOT applied all the way to the top of these stringers.Unfortunately, you will not be able to see this without ripping-up the deck...Which you will no-doubt have to do at some future date, even if the decking is firm now.
I love my little boat. I can't afford much better..But if I wanted to keep it, I had to re-werk much of the below-deck glass werk.
It's sad, because, even with about 20buks worth of chopped product, some rolling, and a little bit of bodily effort, they could've been outstanding boats from the factory. What everyone is saying about these boats is very true. Just buy the thing. Do what you must to make and keep her seaworthy. Make sure your trolling motor and TM battery are up to a day's fishing, and have fun..But for your family's safety's sake, do your homework on her, and DO NOT leave the driveway until you are confident in a return trip.
These pics are of a current Bliner project boat,my nephew bought..Danged thing is still in my driveway.
//www.fishingworks.com/Users/UserFolders/12Footer/PhotoImages/cobra1.jpg

Richard spent 600 dollars for thisd thing..Did he get "took"? I guess that the answer to that will vary, but I think not.Iether the trailer or the engine alone were worth what he paid.

I got a '83 16' 'Liner for $200 w/85 Force. Just finishing the new transom and have to put a chunk of plywood on the floor yet. Not very good waterproofing here. If kept dry it would have been OK. Motor bolts were not sealed in transom. Boat looks good though and price was right.
