I am in a quandry,
I have an opportunity to buy a 92 Maxim with a 120 Force engine of the same year, for 10 grand.
The Marina out at the lake I frequent say it is a good boat and Motor.
Every other Boat dealer in Merc I talk to tell me to stay away from them,or it would not be their 1st choice.
Are these engines that troublesome.

Force has a reputation(I believe deserved)for being primative, unreliable, noisy, and now they are
an orphan.Just compare the number of posts of
Force to E/J and Merc.Keep in mind Force was only
in production about 15 years.

Re: Should I buy a Force Engine???

This is only my opinion but I would stay with Johnson or Evinrude. They seem to me to be more reliable and easier to work on. I owned one Mercury in my life and it will be the only one that I will ever own. For what it is worth, I commercial fish the Ohio River and have for years. I tow in more Merc's, Force, and Chrylser (if there are any left) than I do Johnnie's or Evins. This is only a personal preference. There will be someone come on and love their Force or Merc. Find out how many hours a year they actually run their engines and how old they are. Good luck and whatever you purchase I hope you enjoy it. Don't forget to put the plug in.

Thank you for your replies, I was not sure and my wife would have my head if we bought a problem, as we get very little vacation time,I do not want to spend it at the side of the lake.LOL

Hey Steelspike,
think you may want to go back and acutally compare posts as you stated. I did a few months back........you would be surprised. Force aint nowhere near the top.

Force doesnt have the best rep, and arent high tech, but if they have been well maintained
you should be okay as long as you continue to maintain it. And yes I also run a Force 150. I did have to rebuild it in 1994 as well as put a stator on it last year. I have been running the boat/motor since 1991.

Best of luck

Deerdog

Offer 5 grand for the boat, its NOT worth 10 grand unless you like being "greased". 11 model years old...

Re: Should I buy a Force Engine???

Boat isn't worth more then $3500.. Stay far away from Bayliner and Maxums.... Unless they are stored inside... they will rot very fast...
Force wouldn't be my first choice.. here's why..
The 120 Force motor runs at 155psi compression and has 32 deg of timing advance... that's way too much compression and timing for the octane of fuel you can buy now... "Mercury 300 horse Drag factory race motor has 130 psi 25 deg advance" Also if you run the 50 to 1 oil mix they recommend you are just asking for trouble... The only reason these motors don't detonate all time is that they are set to run WAY rich on the fuel... So if fuel flow is restricted do to carb or fuel line problem they melt down... they are also very prone to over heating which also causes fuel to dentonate... To sum it up they run on the ragged edge of distruction all the time.. if the slightes distrubance happens they self dirstuct..

Re: Should I buy a Force Engine???

If you gotta ask, the answer is no....there are many people in this world that can be satisfied with a force engine, but dilligence in maintenance and patience with brekdown are necessary to offset lower cost....doesn't sound like your cup of tea...
P.S.....howie dean....comparing comp numbers and timng specs between loopers and crossflow motors is comparing apples and oranges...one will ALWAYS tolerate more than the other....

I think everyone is forgetting $10000Canadian is about $6600US, which is still alot for the age of the Boat, unless it is in near perfect condition.

It's still a lot, even if it's in Rubels.
