I replaced the cd box that was bad, boat now runs but tops out at 35 mph @ 2500 rpm's, doesn't seem like I have enough torque out of the whole, how can i get this thing to rev out more?

How fast should it go?

How many rpm's wide open?

Thanks, Adam liszk***

you dont say what year but I have a 86 Force 125 and she turns about 50000 rpms and about 40Mph. Are you sure your Gauges are correct.

I have an '89 Bayliner Capri Cuddy with a 125 Force. I'm not sure of the RPM's because I don't have a tach, but it runs between 35 & 40 mph depending on how rough the water is and how much weight is in the boat.

you might be running on only 3 cyls. I have a 3 cyl 85 hp , and when it was running on 2 cyl's ,it would only go 20 mph ( no tack ) with 38 mph normal . it DIDN'T seem like it was skipping , but was really running on only 2 cyl's. if you have had cd trouble , the cd may not have been hooked up right,or the 1/2 of the cd for that cyl is bad and is not firing . check the plugs . if this is a new boat to you it may be badly over proped ( too much pitch ) , but i doubt this is the problem . check the plugs , take a compression reading on all cyl's and if you find a non-firing cyl , go from there . I've got mine tweaked out also. I am able to get up to 40mph at 5000 RPM's on my 19.5 Foot Bayliner. With an 88 Force 125 HP and 17 Pitch Aluminum Hustler Prop.

I am still trying to figure out how to get it up to the 5500 Rpm's.

What is the timing that this should be set to with the blue Prestolite Ingition? I think I have it set to 30 or 32, but it seems in the manual that it shows it should probably be at about 28. What would the difference be if I have it set to 30 or 32 over 28?

Thanks,
Bryan Cox

Bry21317: If 5000 is what you acchieve with optimal setup (mount height, trim angle, boat load), the only way to get rpm higher is to pitch lower.

Thats the one thing I was thinking of trying to stay away from. I do have the Hustler Aluminum prop system, so I could just swap the Prop blades and make it pretty easy, and only about $60 bucks. If I went down to a 15 pitch, to get more Rpm, am I going to lose top end or would it stay about the same since I'm not getting the extra RPM's now?

Thanks,
Bryan Cox
MTU

Re: 1988/19' Bayliner/125 Force/how fast and how many RPM's wideopen?

Just to give a little more comparison. I have a 120 Force mounted to a 18 ft. Cobra (bass boat). It seems to be a heavy boat for the type. I have a 19 pitch prop and my boat hits top end around 42-43 mph maybe a little more on a good day.
RPM's.....no idea. Need to fix the tach.

P.S. If anyone has a suggestion on that, please let me know. Checked the ???? at the block, and everything looks good. When I turn the key for the ignition, tach jumps to 500 rpms, then right back down. I am thinking ground.
