1985 85hp Force on 16' Bayliner Capri.

Motor ran fine for 2 years. This year ran fine until about a month ago. Ran ok till I cut off motor to change skii'ers. When restarting, motor would idle, but when throttle forward, in gear, motor died. Had to neutral forward, then bring it back up and slam into forward.

Brought it home, checked compression (145 - perfect), changed plugs, tightened bolts holding intake cover, as 3 or 4 were loose. (one had actually fell out). Also put new battery in boat.

Took it out to lake again last night. Started fine. Ran around the lake slow and at full throttle. Toured lake slowly (10-12 mph) because kids in boat were friend's kids and were a little scared at first. Started running throttle 2/3 full and ran fine for a bit. Getting ready to take boat in to load, pushed to full throttle and it wouldn't go any faster. Just ran slowly at full throttle.

I don't have a tach, so i couldn't tell what the RPM's were, but it didn't sound right. It just wasn't getting up to speed. I could cut motor off and restart, but it just wouldn't go any faster in full throttle.

Please help me....

Re: Help Please - Loss of Power

I would start by looking at the throttle Linkage and make sure something is not loose or slipping. Also make sure your cable is good. Could be it's getting old and sticking internally. When it won't power up, pull the hood off and see if the throttle plates are fully open. If not, it's probably a problem in the control Box Linkage or the Cable is bad.

Re: Help Please - Loss of Power

I had a similar problem with a 115 hp Yamaha and it turned out to be a bad coil. Ran fine one day and the next day it had no power or intermitten power. Pull your plugwires and check to see if you have spark to ground (1/2") and then check for spark on your plugs. You can buy a sparkplug wire/coil tester at your auto supply store (autozone) for about $7. Remove all plug wires off your plugs and cap them so you won't get bit then insert one of the plug wires onto the tester and clip the tester to the engine block and turn the engine over a few times and watch the spark jump the tester's gap. Do this for all of your wires. If you have a bad coil or plug wire you will get a very weak or no spark.

Re: Help Please - Loss of Power

In addition to checking the ignition I would inspect/test the fuel pump. Try pumping the primer bulb when attempting full throttle. If the throttle increases then the fuel pump is going (or gone) bad.

Bob

Also check to make sure the ignition(timing) advance linkage(under flywheel)is connected or loose...
