Force Idile Adjustment

Hello everyone-

The engine is a 1987 85HP FORCE. I did a post the other day for some opionions on low idile or stalling when first engaged in gear, UNLESS you give it a little more juice than normal.

I went down to the boat today and it started fine. After warmed up (about more than a minute) the motor starts to idile lower than normal. If you put it in gear to get out of the slip it wants to stall, UNLESS you give it a little more juice.

Other than that the motor runs great at all speeds including WOT.

Since I was going to leave my boat at the slip for a few more days prior to going out I disconnected the fuel line (recommended by a few other posters) and let it run out of fuel. As it starts to run out of fuel the idile increases (as its starving for fuel), but it runs really great as the idile moves up.

I do have a manuel for the motor and think I need to do an adjustment on the carbs to bring the idile up a bit.

Its says 1 1/4 turns out for lightly seated position.

My question is do you think based on the info I have given that this will remidy the problem?

Secondly, prior to started the ajustment on the carbs how do I go about doing this?

Do I start the motor and let it warm up and then start at the top carb, go to slighly seated and then back off 1 1/4 turns and move on the next?

Or do I lightly seat each carb first without starting the motor, make the 1 1/4 turns out and then start and make modifications as when it warms up?

Suggestions appreciated.

Thanks everyone.....

Re: Force Idile Adjustment

Ok - you are really talking about 2 different things - Idle speed and Idle mixture adjustment. Since you seem pretty new to this - I would suggest getting someone who understands how this works to help you out the first time.
I does sound like you are running RICH (to much gas in the air/gas mix at idle).

LEAN is too little gas in the air/gas mix at idle.

to adjust this - turn the motor off. Lightly seat both idle mixture screws (one on each carb).

Turn the screws out 1.25 turns each.

Start engine - let it warm up.

SLOWLY - VERY SLOWLY - turn the first idle mixture screw IN until you hear the engine start to slow down or die. Make a note of where this position is. (lean roll off point) - mine is about .5 turns from seated.

Put the screw back to 1 turns out - start engine again.

Turn screw OUT SLOWLY until engine rpm slows again. This is RICH roll off point. On mine its about 1.25 turns from seated.

Find the mid point between rich and lean (in my case it's 3/4 out from seated) and set the first carb there.

Repeat whole procedure with the 2nd carb - etc.

Average all the carbs settings - and reset them all. (ie - 1=3/4, 2=1 then all carbs get set to 7/8)

1/8 of a turn here does make a difference.
Too lean will burn up an engine - better to error on the rich side.

good luck

jim

Re: Force Idile Adjustment

Thanks for the information. It is certainly appreciated.

Do you think these things get out of ajustment over time?

I run this in the Chesapeake Bay and its most always a bumpy ride.

Re: Force Idile Adjustment

Hello Fishthebay,

To answer your question. Do these settings normaly change. No. The mixture screws on the carbs usually don't change unless someone turns them. Yes, there are some things that could cause them to need to be readjusted. Like barametric presure.

Adjusting the mixture screws will affect the idle, but that is not what they are used for. Jim is right the idle speed is adjusted at a diffent location. Mine on my Force 90 is on the side of the block. I am not sure where yours is. Your manual should give you the proceedure for adjusting the idle. If not, let us know. We will try to look it up for you.

Good Luck

Re: Force Idile Adjustment

Oil Slick thank you for your response.

Correct me if I am wrong, but after reading your post I may interprit from it that I do not need to ajust the carbs, but rather the idle itself which is at a different location in the engine.

Is this correct?

If so, is it just a matter of turning a screw?

I do not foul plugs and run good gas with quicksilver tcw-3 since I have ownned the motor for the last 5 years, so I think maybe the carbs are OK.

Should I mess with carbs (idile mixture) or just locate the idle screw in the engine.
