Hi All, I am new to this site and was hoping that someone could clear somthing up for me. When I check the timing on my 1988 force 50 horse do I need to have the engine running at WOT in the lake, or do I check it with the plugs out at WOT? I've had two different mechanics tell me two different things.

On the water or with a test wheel in the water or large drum is best.

Rick is right, but idle timing can be checked on the muffs.<br />It should track-up fine with the throttle, unless it has been fussed with. These linkages rarely lose adjustment. If it has, check the pins and hinges in the linkage arms for any play due to wear,as this is where the timing problem would be.
