I have a 1986 Force 85 with a bad CDI. Does anyone know if a CDI from a newer year Force motor will work? I just bought 2 off ebay from a Force 90. Any thoughts would be helpfull, thanks.

Re: Force CDI compatability question

brimcn,<br />I have a '86 125 HP Force. It's pretty much the same as your 85 HP except that it has 4 cylinders instead of 3. I'm assuming you have a Capacitor Discharge Prestolite ignition system instead of the previous distributor type ignition system. If you do, I could send you a CD pack (blue) to operate your #3 cylinder of your outboard. The secondary internals went bad in this CD pack to operate the #4 cylinder according to an outboard repair mechanic and surprisingly, it was still delivering spark to the #3 cylinder. The mechanic told me that the internals are independent of one another. If your #3 coil (blue) is connected to a CD pack coil wire that is blue with orange stripes (new colors), you may be in luck. My #4 coil was connected to the CD pack with the blue with red stripe wire (bad). Do you have experience removing and installing CD packs? I've replaced quite a number of them in the past and it takes me roughly 1.5 hours to do it. At the cost of CD packs, it's worth the time risk. I was about to pitch this CD pack in the trash. If you're interested, I could send it to you in the mail. My work phone is 301-227-5794. Please leave a voice mail message and your phone number if I'm not available and I will get back with you.

Re: Force CDI compatability question

Thanks for the responses. Of course I don't know for sure that the CDI's I bought on Ebay are good. The wires are different colors but the position of the wires coming out of the CDI look the same. I'm only using one side (cylinder) of the CDI. From the stator I have a yellow wire going to one connector and a green and red wire going to another. So far I haven't got it to spark but I'm still working on it.
