120-150HP Force Powerhead Swap

If anyone has any experience with this, it would be much appreciated. I have a 1990 120HP Force that's in OK shape. Just got a 1993 150HP Force with bad piston. Can I pull the 120 powerhead off and use it on the 150? Thanks for your reply. Fluker

Why? I could understand you have a 120 piston and you want to stick it in the 150.

Yeah... why do you want to take apart a running 120 to butch together another running 120?

Well.a few things. The 150's bracket has 4 holes and I can jack it up higher, being that it's a 25" shaft. The trim/tilt works on the 150....120, shot. Also, the lower unit is in much better shape on the 150. From what I've heard, the 120hp is the better motor of the group, so if everything else is the same, why not throw the good powerhead on to the 150, ......then sell 'em both and use the money toward something newer/better. Thanks for the feedback......but,CAN I interchange these parts without much hassle? Looking forward to your answer...Thanks, Fluker

fluker.

I may be wrong here. Probably am.

I thought the 150 was a 5-cyl. and the 120 a 4?

Other than that, I think they're real close.

A 150 is a 5 cyl, a 120 a 4 cyl.....would that matter? I'm swapping the whole powerhead. Fluker

Re: 120-150HP Force Powerhead Swap

just reading your post, i have a 1997 120 force, would a 1990 150
force powerhead bolt right on to the 120, and would the cowling fit
silly to go backwards in years but this powerhead, the 150 has
zero hours

Re: 120-150HP Force Powerhead Swap

Here's the deal:

Mercury never changed the mounting stud pattern of the Force /Chrysler block. So, you would think that you could swap any Chrysler/Force block onto it as long as you changed everything--electronics etc. What Merc did do was to make a matching plate when they changed the engine to use a Merc lower unit.

HOWEVER----The Merc lower unit has different splines on the drive shaft and, of course, the crankshaft does also.

SO: (since I do not know exactly when Merc went to their own lower unit) You need to count driveshaft splines. If your 93 has a Merc lower unit spline pattern, then you can not swap the blocks. If it still is a Force lower unit, then you can put on any block you want--3 or 4 cylinder. Note that in 1990 Merc went to a two piece drive shaft still splined with the Force pattern. If Merc still had a 2 piece drive shaft in 93 (assuming different splines) and you can swap the older one onto the newer lower unit, then you can still do it.

But you, Fluke 88 Can NOT swap powerheads--that is unless the above applies or you want to disassemble the engine, find a new style crankshaft and put it in.
