I have just bought a Bayliner capri 14 footer. I was wondering where I find the ID tag for year and make/model. And where i find the engine tag on the Force 50 HP to determine year. And yes I am having trouble getting it to start. Thanks for your help in advance

Re: Force 50 HP Won't start

Thanks Rick, I went to the library after I posted and got the manuel. found the engine yr/model. it seems to be a 87c. I have went thru all of the wires and connected them correctly according to the schematic. I am still not getting it to start. I am going to try new plugs next. The ones in it are of two different kinds and look to be pretty old. If that dosen't work any suggestions on where to look next? Thanks again in advance. I am new to boating and this forum is just great.

Re: Force 50 HP Won't start

Well I have put in the right plugs and still not starting. I know it's getting fuel, I can smell it and feel it in the carb. I'm thinking I have an electrical problem I'm going to pull the fly whell and start cheking things out tomarrow. Any Ideas where to start first?

First, undo the brown wire from the terminal strip on the side of the engine, and tape it off (so it dont touch anything).<br /> <br />Next,Remove the fuel line.<br /><br />Next, use fresh gas/oil mixed in a spray bottle, and shoot some fuel into the carb body.<br /><br />Try to start.<br /><br />If it fires-off, you have ; stale or contaminated fuel, a shorted kill switch, or other fuel delivery problem.<br /><br />If it does not fire off, use a meter, and check for proper voltages and coil resistances as per manual instructions.<br />Then take the flywheel off if it turns-out to be a trigger failure.<br /><br />More than likely, the plugs are contributory tro the problem, if they are ANYTHING other than Champion L82-C.<br /><br />And huffdaddy is dead-on here.. ("fuel/Spark/compression=boom")<br />So check this engine's compression. Seeins how someone stuck oddball plugs in this engine, they may have had time to do thier damage to the jugs and pistons, making all other problems moot.<br />Good luck

Has the engine sat for a long time? Is it getting spark, but just not starting? Are you using fresh fuel? If you have Spark and Good Compression, May just need a Carb. rebuild! Please post Model and Serial Number for us.
