Re: what year on chrysler 35hp

jessedague
I can only narrow it down to a 1970-75 Model. As far as the lower unit taking on water, I would check the Drain/Fill screws and replace the Seals/Washers on them. Try it again. If that does'nt work, it's probably the propshaft seal leaking. This can be verified by doing a Pressure/Vacuum test on the lower unit. Maybe someone else can get you the exact year, so that you can get the parts you need.

Re: what year on chrysler 35hp

rickdb1boat, thanks for the reply. still not sure of the exact year but i already tried replacing the drain/fill screw seals, but that didnt work. there is a small crack on the prop shaft retaining plate and i think thats where the water is coming in at, but i am being told thats not it by a employee at a marine store. i dont know who to believe, about ready to sink the engine and boat. anymore suggestions, cant aford to take it to the marine store.

jessedague
As I suggested, pressure test the lower unit and you will have your answer. You can do this by buying a small hand pump at an auto parts house and getting a fitting for the Fill/Drain screw hole(Lower). Put about 10 PSI pressure into it and you should see the leak easily.

According to the Chilton's manual, your motor is a 1972 model.

Re: what year on chrysler 35hp

Hi Jesse
With all do respects to Scotiany and Chiltons. The Chrysler service literature year model guide lists mod#355HD starting with ser#1001 as being a 1974. Defenately test the L/U befoe you rip into it. Good luck.

NAPA sells a seal kit for your engine for under $15. It includes 4 garloc seals and some o rings. The only thing it doesn't include is the gasket between the upper and lower housings. You could probably make one of them.

Re: what year on chrysler 35hp

I also just purchased a Chrysler 35 hp with electric start. Would love to be able to know the exact year of mine but have been unable to get further than 1970-75. Mine is a 355HG with a serial # of 1050. Would that make mine a 75 if the 355HD is a 1974 model?

I hate to jump in on someone elses post but since we were on the topic..... :) Thanks for any help that someone can give me.

Re: what year on chrysler 35hp

Sorry gentelmen, I'm not trying to start world war three or anything. The Chrysler factory literature I use lists 355HG starting with ser#1001 as a 1974. It also lists 355HG starting with ser#3501 as a 1975. Please don't beat me up, I have very little personal expirence with Chryslers. I have only worked on a half dozen or so. I do how ever find their model and year identification confusing, but also interesting.
Elbert The ser# has more to do with the year of manufacture than the model. Some models were produced for many years. And some years they produced many models of the same horsepower.

alcan,
As long as you have the list of years, why don't you post them so all these Chrysler folks can look them up. That way there will be no confusion as to what year they have. Just put it in a "Chrysler Years" post. I'm sure it would be appreciated.

Re: what year on chrysler 35hp

Hi Rick
Man that would be a great idea. There are a few draw backs though. First I am not a computer wiz and I dont know how. My outboard library consists of manuals, parts catologs, service bulletins,year/model guides and a bunch of other miscellaneous info. Covering most all makes from post war to about 1991.I have a little pre war stuff. This material consumes two 8' shelves plus. The Chrysler year/madel book alone is 56 pages long. How much time do you think it would take me to do this. Remember it,s about all I can do to peck out a little note like this. How ever I am always glad to share info with anyone. And will always do my best to send scans.( when I can make that thing work) Any way seasons greetings, and I'll be looking forward to reading you more. One of the things I like best about this board is it lets me know how much info I don't have. I learn new stuff all the time.

Re: what year on chrysler 35hp

Hi Alcan,
I undersand now that it would be tough to put all that on this site. Did'nt realize you had that much info on the chrysler's.(Pretty Cool) That's good to know though, as there seems to be a rush of questions about them lately. You would need an entire website devoted to the collection you have. As long as your around, there should be no problem finding out the info that people need. Thanks for the advice and corrections, as it is important to give accurate info to owners of these beasts. Merry Christmas and keep them coming,

Re: what year on chrysler 35hp

Rick, thanks for the December 18, 2002 post with the web page listing the different models. Found my engine in a jiffy (1975 Chrysler 757H8D)! Fortunately I'm just looking the info up for informational purposes since the engine runs GREAT!!!

I bought the boat (1976 16' Delco), engine and trailer and the end of the 2002 boating season for $500!!! She's ugly, but we went skiing and fishing several times with her last year and she hasn't failed us yet.

Just this year am I actually getting around to working on the boat and engine though. Rewiring, reupholstering, refinishing the fiberglass, oil, gear oil, etc. This is our first boat, and with the work I'm doing to her, she's starting to look and sound a helluva' lot better. I was just going to sell it since it is a bit small, but with the strong engine and new looks it'll be hard to let her go. Thanks again.

Joe
