Hi,
What sort of problem do I have when there is loads of white smoke that smells of oil coming from under the hood. The higher the revs the more the smoke. The engine seems fine but I am afraid to take it for a spin in case of fire.Would this be the case?
I suspect some sort of exhaust gasket. If it is this is it a major job?
Thanks in advance.

Remove the hood and look for the leak. Might only be a similar problem a SSUHJK 1987 Force. Exhaust to peehole disconnect. Then talk about it afterwards at the pub. Guiness Stout.

Larry - Have you run it with the cover/hood off?? Try it and look.

Thanks for the replies.
I did take the hood off and could'nd find anything obvious.(except the smoke)
I thought there might be an exhaust gasket gone or something.I pulled the power unit off and found there were no gaskets on there at ALL??
Should there be?
Thanks.

Larry, run a compression test asap.
Do not run this engine until you find the problem. If the compression test fails, pull the head, and inspect the bore, piston crown, and sealing surfaces.
If the compression test passes, pull the exaust port plate, and inspect the mating surfaces for signs of leaking.
The plug condition should give you a good idea of where water is entering the combustion chamber causing white steam, which would steam-clean the nearest plug.

At any rate, smoke should stay inside the block until the exaust housing at bare minimum.
Is it overheating?

To 12 footer.
Thanks. I think you might be on the mark with the exhaust plate. Took it off and it was as uneven as a cork screw.Crossed filed it flat and it looks much better.
I done the compression test before I dismantled engine and they were fine. Its not steam, definitly smoke.
Keep you posted.
Thanks.
