1989 force 150 backfire runs rough

I bought a boat with a force 150 on back. It started and idled fine at first. It reved up and then started backfiring and carring on at all rpm. The first prob I ran into was no spark cyl 1. New power pack cured that prob. Still acted up at all rpm. Timing was at 28 degrees and all other spark plugs fired. Rebuilt carbs and checked fuel pump. Ran through several wiring diagrams and found different ways to wire stator, power packs, trigger, and coils. The diagram on the motor is what I am using. Is it possible that the trigger would cause the firing order to change causing the rough running and backfire? Idles ok sometimes and won't stay running others.

I also replaced the stator to try and remedy the prob. No luck at $ 175.00. Anyone need a new cdi stator for a Force 150. Good price.

Engine is not firing in the correct order. CD's are fragile and will burn if they can't discharge.

If I follow the diagram on the motor it refers to the wires by color not number. By wiring the stator by the color of the wires not by the numbers it is a totally different setup. What should I follow the numbers or the colors?

the manual I have just has a generic cross section of the tilt motor. No specific parts breakdown.

Wiring by colour or numbers won't hurt the system, and doing it the other way is your only choice at this moment. I run mine at 32* with high octane. My wrench said the motor is good shape. Using L76V plugs.

thanks sony. It runs better with the wiring by color. I found another cd module that is probably bad. It only fires the second plug when the motor is running. I might just replace the other two modules so that all three are new. anyone know the best place to get a good price on modules?
