I overheated, and blew a head gasket. replaced it compression is good. carbs are clean. fire to all plugs (dealers answer to fixing this prob. was to replace the CD module for #3 & #4. $440, and it still was running on the top 2 only). Plugs in #3 & #4 are wet with fuel (no water as far as I can tell). bottom carb seems to be spitting fuel quite a bit when I run it. Also, tried pulling a plug wires off while running and got the c**p shocked out of me; should they be leaking that much votage???? It was running fine before the overheat, so I feel I should be looking for something related to the high temperture.
Thanks a million Greg

Wet plugs and hot spark..This is a real tough nut to crack.
You asked about voltage and leaking--These ignition setups can develop enough voltage to produce a half-inch arc! A major cause of CD failure is the leakage you described. It can be seen on a dark night, and you must correct it.
I would suspect iether water in the fuel, or a water jacket leak. If it were fuel (wet plugs), and you had a hot ignition on all cyls, and the timing hasn't gone waaaay out of time, it should run on all.
Have you put a spark checker on the suspect cyl's plug wires and checked for spark?
Check the flywheel key and keyway if you have spark on all four, and you are certain it is fuel on on the plugs.

12footer,
I will try and check all you mentioned. I'm bringing the boat up tomorrow to work on, so it might be Thur. before I can get back to the board with more info. Thanks a million for the reply. Greg

If the carb is spitting back I would suspect reeds.
Contrary to popular belief, they will sometimes go
thru engine without damage to cylinder. Pulling the intake to check them is a quick job and new gasket is not needed. Just RTV it and put it back together.

You most likely have broken a reed...its common on Force engines.

TMD

Well
no broken reeds, but I can see daylight when I hold them up and look through them (several on the lower pair) Could this be the problem????
Thanks for all the replys
greg

Typical Force..reeds you can see thru..not a prob...

I am wondering if maybe the Tech that replaced the 3-4 power pack...wired it backward?

TMD

That is an interesting take. What really p****es me off is that the shop charged me $70. (1 hour of time) to diagnose the problem  . I'll take a look at that wiring, but I'm still wondering if there is another heat related issue here  .
Thanks a million
Greg

I think I found the problem; lets see what you think. I last mentioned that several of the reed petals were not fully closing, so I thought I would see how much pressure it would take to close them. Didn't take too much, so I figured I would see how much pressure it would take to open the ones that were closed fully. Well it turns out that it took a lot of pressure as they were stuck closed with some goopy baked fuel mixture theat they stick to every time they close. You think I should try an clean em' up with some carb cleaner or replace them??? Also would you go ahead and replace the ones that are not closing fully?????
Thanks for all the help.
Greg

I would go ahead and clean them with carb cleaner
and try it. Should work but if doesn't it's minor job to pull and change them. There's a spec in the manual on how far open they can be.

Re: 89' Force 125 still hitting on only 2 cylinders

Well Still not hitting on # 3& #4. I've got fuel and spark. Checked the wiring on the new CD unit, and it seems to be wired right from the trigger and the stator, however the wires from the CD unit are not the same colors as the wires in the diagram in the manual. Can I switch the 2 wires from the CD unit to the (one for #3 & one for #4) opposite terminal, and try that without frying anything??? I can't think of anything else that might be causing the problem. I don't think I'm getting water in the cylinders (when I pull the plugs on #3 &#4 and put a match to the hole I get combustion). Any help out there?????????
Thanks a million
Greg
