I recently purchased a boat with a 87 force 50hp (507Y7C sn 2477) and the clamp which keeps the engine from pivoting up in reverse must be manually activated. It appears to have no spring load to auto clamp when the engine is lowered into the water.

Can anyone help? Also, where can I get a diagram of the lower unit showing this clamp and parts. I purchased a Clymer manual, but as usual they try to cover too many models without much detail.

Here's a link to your motor with diagrams.
http://www.stemtostern.com/mercindex/GetFunctionGroups.asp?SerialRangeID=1289
I used your serial to get to the proper page. You can start from stemtostern to see how I got there, or just trust me

I've seen a lot of engine that have a manual engage/disengage on the engine lock, especially on the smaller (<100hp) motors. Thought it's possible that something is malfunctioning with yours, I bet this is how it's intended. You may find yourself glad it doesn't automatically lock when it comes time to work on it!

Thanks for your responses. The diagram shows sevral parts of the reverse lock assy that are missing from my unit.

Guess I'd better go to my local Mercury shop for help.
