Re: '91 Force 90hp

I bought the boat last weekend and took it out. They claimed it ran great and started every time...
I was hard to start at first so I figured that it might just be cold blooded....
It ran well after I got it started and rushed to go from idle in neutral to higher RPMs in forward. If you don't hurry from idle to forward it will stall most of the time. Once you get going it seems to run pretty well, speed tops out at about 30 mph though, is that good?
Once it is put in idle it will idle for a while then die. After it dies it is very hard to start!! Once started it is very hard to get going without causing it to stall. The dealer claims that it runs fin with the earmuffs on and that is how they normally diagnose their service boats. I told them to put it on the water and see what it does! I am pretty upset about the whole thing because I already took it back once and they claimed the carb gasket was leaking and they replaced it and the problem should be solved, wrong, it is not solved...
Any ideas anyone?

Re: '91 Force 90hp

Not to embarrass you but have to cover some basics. Sorry, I don't know if you are new to this or not.

Are you pumping the fuel line bulb till firm, before starting?
Increase throttle slightly above idle?
Applying choke for about 3 seconds before starting?
Has the compression been tested?
Does the boat have a tach? If so, what are the rpm at full throttle?
Rpm's at idle?
Does the fuel line primer bulb stay slightly firm or go flat while running?
When idling, just before it dies, try pumping up the bulb to see if it will keep running.
What brand and size boat is it on?

Possible fixes could be as simple as increasing the idle speed, replacing fuel line or pump diaphram, or clean and adjust the carbs.

When running on muffs, there is no backpressure on the exhaust. So a dealer that diagnoses an engine on muffs is likely an idiot, conman, or liar.

Re: '91 Force 90hp

Thanks for responding Roscoe; I am new as of last week, so I really need the help...

I pump the bulb up prior to starting, I am not sure how firm it should be but it does not get hard just firmer than when you start.

I do not know a way to increase the idle other than to move the shifting handle open or directly on the carbs. With the handle forward the starter will not turn.

Most of the time it will not start while it is hot, so the choke should not be required but I use the choke when I first start it and it usually starts no problem cold, it just stalls easy unless you push the handle forward quickly.

The compression was checked yesterday and when I showed up the mechanic was not there but the owner told me that he was told it was not a problem; I take that as to mean it was good or at least acceptable.

RPMs at idle is just below 1000 maybe 800, at full throttle it is about 4500.

The bulb stays about the same while running but not really firm.

The motor dies as if it is turned off it does not sputter to warn it is going to stall so I can't pump the bulb specifically at that time because it seems to idle fine till it dies.

This is on a 91 Bayliner 1800 Capri.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Re: '91 Force 90hp

There is a way to increase the throttle, but it depends on what controls you have on your boat. On a Comander 3000, you push in the center of the controls shift handle, where it pivots at the bottom. This disconnects the shifter and allows you to increase throttle.

On some controls, you pull the throttle handle inward, toward the drivers seat. Some have a lever that you raise.

Next time you are out, try running the engine with the cover off. You could have an exhaust leak, or a heat related issue, causing the coils to fail when hot.

Since the engine starts cold, I'm leaning toward a heat or ignition issue.
Since it doesn't stall at full throttle, fuel delivery should be ok.

Full throttle rpm's are low, they should be 4900-5250.
This could be because of the wrong size prop, or because you are missing on one cylinder. You would probably NOT be able to hear the miss.
I would check for spark on each cylinder when the engine is cold. Check again when engine is hot and you are experiencing problems.

How is accelleration from about 1500rpm to full throttle?

Does the boat struggle to get up on plane?

At this point, I wouldn't take the dealers word on the compression. He should have given you specific numbers for each cylinder. Preferrably 110# or higher, and not more than 15# difference between any two. See if you can get someone else to check it for you.

Keep the info coming, and we'll do our best to get you thru this.

Drop some seafoam liquid cleaner in there and see what happens. Napa auto has Seafoam

Re: '91 Force 90hp

Sorry I am so slow to respond, I have been waiting to get the boat back from the shop...
I gave them the boat after taking it out the second time with the same problems, they claimed to have no idea what could make it run so bad but "they would find out" I pick it up tomorrow afternoon and am going out with them before I take it. I hope it is fixed and I don't have anymore problems but I will report back here and let you know...
Some time this weekend I am going to try and change the impeller, that is, if the book shows up in the mail, I don't want to try without it!

Re: '91 Force 90hp

Hey all,
Got the boat back today and it seems to run pretty well... No stalling but the bulb will not stay firm, they claim to have called bayliner and they said it may not stay firm because there is no electric fuel pump.
I seem to remember the old 25 hp Johnson that I had years ago and the bulb stayed pretty firm on that one...
Should this one do the same?
The main things are fixed though, it idles without stalling, I can go in and out of gear and it will not stall, the top speed is increased by about 5 mph to 34 mph and the prop is pretty foul right now, so if I clean that up it should be better, at least I think.
I still did not recieve the repair book so no impeller change this weekend.
I plan on taking it out this weekend if the weather gets a little better.
We shall see how it goes..
