Somebody gave me an sears outboard Model # 225.581501. From what I can find out it is made by force for sears. It's a 1986 15 HP model.

The lower cylinder is scored bad and I'm ordering a short block for it to rebuild.

My question is:

When ordering from sears they indicate that the part I ordered is not the original, but is the manufactureres certified replacement. It say's the same thing for the head,

The short block does not come with the head, so does that mean that the head will not fit the new short block?

Actually is there going to be other problems with all the other bolt on stuff that does not come with the short block. i.e. coils, flywheel, etc, etc?

pbailey

TMD,

The parts are available through sears and the price for a short block for this engine is $299.00

From the little checking around I did this is a great price that nobody has come close to.

I have in fact already ordered the part.

But my question is as stated in my original post.

I was just trying to find out ahead of the part getting here if I was going to have to replace the head and other parts that might not fit the "manufacturer's Certified Replacement" short block.

I'm not sure who is making and selling parts for Force outboards, but I assume it is Mercury, as the waterpump kit I got for ot was in Mercury packaging with a Mercury part #.

pbailey

"Manufacturer certified"???
I would think it would bolt right up.

Let us know how this works out.

A short block assembly includes...just the crankcase and interior parts. You will have to bolt everything on from your old engine.

TMD

Re: 15 hp force/sears/craftsman

Power head just arrived. It looks like the reason they had a different part # on it was that it is for later year models and they send the modification components for the earlier years. Such as tell tail fittings or plugs which ever is needed and strator mounting hardware which the paper work say's years 1998 and later don't need.

After assembly what mix should I use for break in?

What is the break in proceedure?

pbailey

Thanks roscoe,

I had figured on double oil and I did wet everything with Yamalube 2-stroke oil before assembly.

The link you posted was what I was looking for.

Thanks again.

Fired up on the second pull.

Made a couple of adjustments and ran it for about an hour.

Still can't figure out how you can get a power head from sears for $299.00 and everybody else wants $900.00-$1100.00

pbailey

I am glad to see that someone got to take advantage of the closeout that sears had on the shortblocks.I purchased some parts for my 9.9 Gamefisher and they sent me the closeout special.the price was unbelivable!!!!!I only have about 10 hours on my motor so the closeout was of no use to me yet I am tempted to get one and hold on to it.Glad to see you got a bargain!!!I am still considering it.I now have 11 hours on my motor.i will probably decide and they will be out of them. charlie

That price had been posted for quite a while. The guy who gave it to me said that he heard a big bang from the motor and said it ran with a shutter after that when he was trying to get back to the ramp. He shut it down and got a tow back.

I put it in a trash can and it didn't run to badly for me. Just had a rough and unreliable idle.

Used it all winter for duck hunting. Went to do some PM in the spring, took the head off to have a look and there were two grooves in the cylinder wall of the lower cylinder about a 1/4-inch wide and about an 1/8-inch deep. They were directly opposing each other, one at 12 o'clock and the other at 6 o'clock. The head looked like a piece of metal bounced around in there for a while.

I thought that I would find that the rings snapped and passed through the engine, but when I got a look at the rings through the ports they were still intact.

There was very little carbon on the piston head compared to the upper cylinder. Could this have happened from water getting in there? Is this a sign of detonation?

pbailey
