Hello again,
I took my boat out today to decarbonize the engine and while running the boat at half throttle to warm up the engine, the engine was stuttering like it wanted to shut off. It starts fine and idles fine - but only at mid throttle it will bog down for a few seconds and then return to normal.
I did the decarbonizing procedure anyway and the problem is still there. In my driveway I removed each plugwire at a time to check for current by putting a screwdriver into the plugwire and grounding it off around a centimetre from the spark plug to look for spark. The two top plugs spark a distance of one centimetre and the bottom plug sparks around two centimetres away from the spark plug.
Bottom line is the bottom plugwire (Number 3 Sparkplug) gives out more current/voltage than Number 1 & Number 2.
I cleaned the distributor terminals and the points, I cleaned the plugs and gave them a gap of 40 . I am using Champion L82C sparkplugs.
When in neutral I rev the engine and it backfires when I release the throttle and then shuts off. Possibilities:
- I have a new Niehoff pro-power coil from a 1984 Chrysler Reliant. Would this work to correct the problem with Number 1 & Number 2 plugwires?
- Regapping the points?
Any other suggestions?

Re: '72 Chrysler 85HP Outboard

Have you considered that it might be a fuel problem. Do you know when the carbs and the fuel pump were last rebuilt. When I took my Tillotson apart, I couldn't believe the amount of crap in it. I ended up buying another carb on ebay. Another problem area could be your puddle valve screens getting plugged up. That would show itself at idle or low speed though. Still, it's a good idea to clean them occasionally. Especially seeing that you have decarbed. You could also have a defective fuel pump diaphram. If you haven't changed your fuel hoses, think about doing that too. NAPA has any length you like. Walmart has the bulb.

Hi,

I would certainly give the carbs a good "going over" (cleaning).

This probably isn't related to your problem but your plugs should be gapped at .30 and not .40. Actually our motor (I have the same one) calls for a surface gap plug (Champion L76V). If you cleaned the points, I would check the gap. Make sure it is set at .014.

Your problem could also be in your air/fuel mixture but I would take the carbs apart first and then set the mixture.

Shane

Re: '72 Chrysler 85HP Outboard

I CHECKED THE POINTS GAP .014 WHICH WAS CORRECT. THE SPARK PLUGS I GAVE .30 GAP. THE ENGINE DOES NOT BACKFIRE AS MUCH.
THIS MORNING I TRIED FILLING THE CYLINDERS WITH ENGINE TUNE TO LET IT SOAK BUT IT ALL CAME OUT THE EXHAUST AND PEE HOLE. IS THIS NORMAL?
I TOOK THE BOAT OUT THIS AFTERNOON THE BOGGING DOWN STILL EXISTS AT FULL THROTTLE. ARE THERE ANY ALTERNATIVES THAN OPENING UP THE CARBS TO CLEAN THEM? ISN'T THERE SOMETHING LIKE CARBORATOR SOLVENT THAT YOU CAN PUT THE CARBS IN TO SOAK FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS THEN BLOW THEM OUT WITH COMPRESSED AIR?
My problem is I don't have access to parts for this engine in my neck of the woods nor does anyone want to touch my 1972 engine.
Thanks again for all your help.

Do you have a NAPA near you? They have the carb rebuild kit for Tillotson(Chrysler) carbs. They're about $10-14 apiece. They also come with very good instructions. I'd get a fuel pump diaphragm kit too.

hey defender. Carb cleaner and compressed air are used once carbs are removed and taken apart. You need to take out the rubber gaskets and seals before you can use carb cleaner on them. Carb cleaner is hard on rubber

Okay, I found a Napa not too far from me. You mentioned that I need a Tillotson(Chrysler) carb rebuild kit and a fuel pump diaphram. Could you please give me the part numders for these items if possible?
Thanks!

Napa part numbers are
Fuel pump kit is 18-7806 ($8.69)
Carb kit is 18-7037 ($14.88)

On the fuel pump kit only replace the diaphram and the main gasket. Do not attempt to replace gaskets for fuel seats unless you see busted gaskets

Re: '72 Chrysler 85HP Outboard

I did a compression test today. The readings of the cylinders were as follows:
1 is 135
2 is 135
3 is 150
It says on the compression test manual that if two adjacent cyclinders have low readings then the head gasket is probably faulty. Is this accurate? What else would these readings suggest?

Re: '72 Chrysler 85HP Outboard

I removed the head today to check the head gasket. It did have a leak. It was leaking from #2 port. The trail of black led up to one of the headbolts which was covered with carbon. Could this have happened because the head bolts weren't that hard to brake/remove or because of the pits and hairline scratches I noticed on the head? Would you recommend that I take the head and have it shaved? Would shaving the head increase HPower? Could I get the correct torque for these headbolts? Thanks again.

Re: '72 Chrysler 85HP Outboard

Getting the head machined is probebly not necessary. Torque the head bolts to 20 ft lbs.

TMD

If you have a Thermometer to measure the temp and some Hot water around 140 deg..the T-stat should open.

TMD

Re: '72 Chrysler 85HP Outboard

I removed the carbs today. I totally disassembled them and used carburator cleaner in every nook and cranny along with compressed air. One float had it's centre brass arm bent upwards which I think would have stopped that bowl from COMPLETELY FILLING. Could this be the cause of my ENGINE bogging down at full throttle?
Thanks for your help.

Re: '72 Chrysler 85HP Outboard

You bet..the carb would soon run out of fuel and you would be limited to the amount of fuel it could supply for high speed.

TMD
