Hello all,

My 1972 85HP Chrysler threw a rod (Aaahh, 3 hours stranded on the sandbar!), so I'm back to working on the above motor.

My problems with the 55HP have been as follows: 1) Would hit on only 1 cylinder for the first few minutes, then the 2nd one would kick in. It would then run fine the rest of the day. 2) The time it took for the 2nd cyl. to kick in took progressively longer, until finally it would not kick in. 3) At lower speeds, you can hear it trying to kick in but it does not.

I had gone through the motor and replaced many items (head gasket, thermostat, exhaust plate gaskets, puddle drain gasket). The mechanic had replaced the points and condensors a few months earlier. Oh, I guess I should point out that this motor has the battery type ignition (2 sets of points and condensors under flywheel & 2 external coils). I had decided that the problem was under the flywheel but I couldn't get it to come off, so I stopped. Well, I'm going to rent an impact wrench and get with it now! I have tried swapping coils before and that didn't affect which cylinder worked.

So, what I'm wondering is, what do I try next? I'm trying to get the flywheel off, to look at the points and stator. Anything else to check??

Also, I noticed a while back, that the jet size on the carb was WAY out of proportion. I believe the manual calls for a .066 jet. Mine has a .096 on it! I know that would not make it run right but it can't be my problem, since it ran good at one time like it is.

Anyway, let me know if you have any suggestions, since I'm anxious to get back to those catfish!

Shane

When you had the puddle drain assy apart, did you clean the screens and check that the two reeds on the assy were OK. I've had similar symptoms to yours and the puddle drains were clogged up. You might try a bolt on puller instead of an impact gun. I bought one years ago and it gets the flywheel off every time without a problem.
