Perhaps some of you force mechanics out there can help me with a problem. model of engine is 1786. I took the boat (a 19 foot bayliner trophy) out today and ran for about 15 minutes then bogged down on me. Had to run it back to the ramp at 3500 rpms. At the ramp it idled fine but would start running rough if I tried to get the rpms up. If anyone has any thoughts on this, sure would appreciate it.

You might have overheated it. Blew the head gasket. Or dropped a cyl some other way.

Check compression and spark.

TMD

Hi Marine Doctor,

Thanks for your reply. I just got it out of the shop. They said the compression was good. I will check all cylinders for spark and see what gives.
Will be back to you. Thanks again.

Sorry Marine Doctor but I forgot to tell you complete water pump was just replaced and it has great water flow. Will crank and idle great but when accelerating will not go past 3500 rpms without running very rough and boggingf down.
Thanks

Hey Galeforce,

I had an 88 Force 125 for about 5 years, and there were a couple of times that I dropped a cylinder. Boat would barely plane off but idled fine. I would check all the wiring on the relay and test the coils and powerpacks. the first time I dropped one it ended up being a loose wire, the second time was a faulty power pack. Hope that helps.
