I'm dropping the lower unit to replace the impeller. Is there any type of shift linkage I need to unhook or can I just put it in gear and then drop it like a Merc?
I just replaced the impeller, have tech manual, and have problem now. Constantantly in gear. I think timing of spline gear to shaft is my problem. Did you experience any thing simular?

Manual said shifter to forward gear. Have you experienced this problem? I am new to this forum, but have mechanical experience.

Perhaps we could help each other.
Do this.
1) Disconnect the shift cable at the powerhead.
2) Drop the lower unit.
3) Put the shift arm up at the powerhead in about the middle of the slide bracket (roughly)
4) Grab a pair of pliers and get your lower unit in neutral by turning the shift shaft unitl you find the FWD/NTRL/REV positions. Put it in Neutral.
5) Reinstall the Lower Unit. You might need some help to do it this way. Get a friend to spin the flywheel clockwise until the shaft seats in the crank. Keep lifting it up in there. Then have him very slightly move the shift arm back and forth a little until the shift shaft seats.
6) Bolt it back on.
