Re: speed ohmeter vacume line??? and idle mixture help
On the outside of the transom, you should find a small (about 3") fin-like attachment mounted to the back of the boat. Fin of the little this piece will protrude just a bit lower than the actual hull, so it gets hit with un deisteurbed water flow when the boat is underway.
This is called a pettit (sp?) fitting. It has a very small hole in it, that samples the current force of the incomming water. A small hose (about the 1/4 outside diameter), goes from it to the speedometer itself. Make sure this hose is open, and the orafices on both the speedometer and petit are also open.

If you do not see the petit mounted on the transom, look for a spot where it shows evidence of something being mounted there. It may not be werking because this pickup device has been knocked-off. This is not uncommon, as flotsam can quickly remove it,or damage it.
If you find this is the case, more important than getting your speedometer going, will be the old mounting screw holes in the transom. This could destroy your transom in one season, and must be sealed after the transom has been internally dried-out.
