i got a boat and don't know very much about it!!
1990 bayliner capri. 4 cyl force?

i started it while launching it and a buzzer started going off. it was in the water but not totally. i never got it off the trailor.
after a little searching on here i see it's most likely a temp warning buzzer.
is there somewhere on this boat i can hook up a garden hose to, so i can run the motor for a few minutes at the house to make sure that buzzer doesn't come on again?
thanks

Re: hi, i'm boat stupid

Welcome to iboats, mind.

Please tell me this boat has an outboard motor, not an L-drive i/o.

Not to make you feel bad, but for background:

Did you test drive the boat before you bought it?
Did the alarm go off during the test drive?
Has this boat been sitting for a long time?
Any idea when the waterpump or pump impeller was last changed?
Please provide model and serial number of motor if possible.

As for hose attachments (muffs), they don't work very well on any of the Force motors due to the design and placement of the water pickup ports. Best to have the lower unit fully submerged in water. They do make muffs that are supposed to work on your motor, but they don't work well at all.

Being that the motor is new to you, it is best to replace the entire waterpump housing and impeller. Who knows how old the current one is.

Re: hi, i'm boat stupid

I hope you started the boat with the prop under water. If not the water pump(impeller) is fried. In any case, as Roscoe says, change out the old one.

Re: hi, i'm boat stupid

Welcome to the wonderful world of boating! I suggest reading and researching as much as you can. Not only the maintenance, but the operation of the boat as well. There is tons of info right here at iboats.

Ignorance with boats will cost you a lot if you are not aware of basics. One of the main rules is that one never dry starts a boat engine. It just takes a few seconds and your rubber impeller for the water pump is shot.

If the previous owner started it up on the trailer without any means of hooking up water to it, he fried the water pump. I will walk away from any boat that the owner just starts it up to see if it runs. That is a big NO-NO,,,,ask the few hundred that has posted here because of the same problem.

FWIW, research ramp procedures and etiquette, it could save you some frustration and rage at the ramp.

mind,

1. Welcome
2. Everyone starts a novice not knowing anything.
3. We all do dumb things (if you haven't yet, you will). When it happens the key is learn, move past it, and laugh at it. (see stupid human tricks section of the forum.)
4. This forum has lots of people with tons of knowledge and quick answers. Great resource. (this is the 4th reply after 8 middle-of-the-night hours)

Roscoe has the right approach on how to start - give details.

Is this a stern drive or outboard??
Do you have a model for the boat?
Do you have the model of the engine (size, cylinders, manufacturer)?
If a sterndrive the stern drive also has a make/model. What is it?

Let's just start from there for now. If you don't know then just tell us what you can. We can go from there.

Again, welcome.

Re: hi, i'm boat stupid

i expected to make stupid costly mistakes. thats why i bought this cheap crappy boat instead of a nice one :)
so it looks like i have fried the water pump since i started it in the driveway a few times.

it's a stern drive.
i don't know what model it is. bayliner capri 19'10".
engine says us marine power 120ld90c and the title says 120 horsepower. 4cyl.
i didn't see anywhere that stated the stern drive make/model. there is a force emblem on the boat, i don't know what that refers to.

where can i buy a waterpump? i searched ebay but didn't see one. i don't know exactly what to
type in to search for though.

Re: hi, i'm boat stupid

Search for "impeller". However, you need to know what drive you have. Aren't there any logos on it or serial numbers? If there's a snake and the drive is charcoal in color, it's an OMC Cobra. If it's black it's usually a Merc Alpha 1. (Other possible types of drives from that year and engine size are foreign to me.)

And lastly... although it's tempting to fool with the boat (like starting it in the driveway without water), don't... not until you know a little more about it.

Hope you post alot.

i looked for parts here but didn't see any, but again, i don't really know what to look for or where to look.

i'm not exactly sure where the inpeller is on this motor, but i found something with two hoses going to it which i'm assuming may be water in and water out. i guess i'll pull it off and see whats inside!

Re: hi, i'm boat stupid

i agree, you are not stupid, just a beginner. However, we all do stupid things. (Raise your hand if you have launched without the drain plug in.)

Let's start with a couple of things:

1. What you have damaged is the impeller. This is a small rubber piece with fins. The impleller pumps water from the lake up to the engine. The waterpump is on the engine and circulates water through the engine and back out the stern drive. The impeller will be found in the back on the stern drive. Mine is under a cover on the back near the top that removes with 4 bolts.

2. Depending on the drive this can be a simple job to fix and not that expensive (think in the $25 range). We need to know more about the drive to tell.

3. I suspect you will be able to find the replacement impeller, even for oddball drives. Impellers are wear items and replacment is common.

4. You need to know that once you get the impeller fixed you need to lower the stern drive before you start the engine. I don't know if this is all drives, buy many shift gears at the bottom of the drive. As a result the shafts are turning all the time, and if you run the engine with the drive up you put undo stress on the universal joints. That is why your tilt indicator has a red area on it. You do not run the engine with the drive tilted into the red area.

5. You will need a set of muffs for running the engine in your driveway. This is also known as a motor flusher. ( http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg..._id=217900&list_time=1148232347&view_id=56096 . It is inexpensive. You put it over the openings on the side of the stern drive, connect the garden hose, and run water.

6. Marine engines are not too tough, but if you are going to do work on them you need to know a couple of things. You already know that the cooling system is not closed and you need to get fresh water from the lake. You also need to know that these engines are in closed compartments (car engines are open to the ground). Sparks and fuel vapors are a deadly combination. Alternators and starters are sealed. You don't have an air cleaner but a spark arrester, and it is needed. This isn't hard, but it is important.

7. Need to learn? (we all do). Try the US Power Squadron. They have classes (free) to teach you basic rules of the road and safety. http://www.usps.org . Should be one near you.

Remember, details are great, pictures are better. Any label is better than none. Look at the engine. Who made the alternator or carb? Delco/rochester - then it is a GM engine.

Find a symbol on the drive? Show us?

The more you give the more you get. Welcome

Re: hi, i'm boat stupid

Mind -

Welcome!

Hang in there. I owned a 1990 Bayliner Capri, it was a great boat, gave my famiy 12 years of reliable, repair free service. We finally just traded it in for another boat.

You'll find that on these boards there are a couple of Bayliner bashers...who cry wolf so often, and at every opportunity, that they can be dismissed all together.

Just filter out those posts, and learn what you can! Welcome!

Bondo -

Good chatch - you could be right about the muffs.

mind - you should check and make sure.

The example was just to show to show what muffs look like. Once we get the model of the drive verified give a people here at iboats a call and see if they know what fits your drive.

Re: hi, i'm boat stupid

Yes, they should be covering an opening/ water intake. The hose has to be hooked up to it with water going to it before you start the engine (this is assuming you fixed the impeller) . MAKE SURE the hose is on the side where the gate is! I don't know much about this engine but some I/O's only have intakes on one side of the lower unit, I am not sure about yours.

I see a notation for a 50 to 1 gas mix. Is this a 2 stroke engine?

Don S, are you familiar with this setup?
