i was wondering if it is normal to find a boat that is in pretty good shape for $3000-4000. I don't care about cosmetics, I am just talking about the engine being reliable and the hull/stringers/floor being fine. Looking for a bowrider or something similar, maybe 15-17 feet in length. Is this an unreasonable pricepoint?

You're in line. You'd probably be looking at late 80's to early 90's bowriders with 3.0 Mercruisers. They're everywhere. And many have hidden structural problems. Be very careful as it's quite difficult to see such hidden rot, but I'm sure you can find what you're looking for in that price range.

My 1992 Rinker 18 footer with a 3.0 Mercruiser was bought for $3K 2 years ago. Has a fair amount of sun cracked vinyl and scuffs/scratches and faded gelcoat. Also some minor mechanical problems that I handled myself for reasonable cash. I'm satisfied with the purchase overall.

Likewise, the OTHER 92 Rinker 18 footer I bought for $3,600 1 year before that looked better on the surface, but became quite the project. I jumped the gun and made the mistake of trusting my own ability to assess a boat. In the process I ended up learning how to replace engine mounts, stringers, and a portion of the transom. Wonderfully educational, but a bit expensive and was more of a project than I was hoping to get.

But in the end it helped me to understand EXACTLY where to look to find my next boat, which was significantly more solid. Lots of time-bombs out there in your price range, but also lots of functional rides. Good luck in your search! If you can wait till fall, that's when the REAL deals pop up from people who are getting out of the sport and don't want the expense and hassle of winterizing...

Check for a publication called Boat Trader available in most 7-11s & other convenience stores.

I'm in Georgia too, northeast of Atlanta...There are tons of used boats up by Lanier. Lots of Brokers take the trade in boats and move em. Don't be afraid to make a low ball offer. A buddy of mine did this and the guy called him the next day and said it's all yours for the offer. Of course it was in the Fall.

Call this guy - Jim Holcomb (404) 680-2991. He is semi-retired and just brokers boats. Very knowledgeable and won't let you buy a lemon. You may need to spend a bit more but I think there are lots of boats out there for under $5,000 that are in good shape. Go visit some of the lots. They might give you a call if someone wants to upgrade. Most new boat sellers don't want to mess with an entry level trade in. Good luck and post your findings here before you buy to find out what to look for or what to look out for!

Go to e-bay motors, select boats, then powerboats, then sort by distance. There are several boats listed, everything from projects to start em and go...several in your range. Good luck!

just be patient and like everyone has said, check ebay and local papers and boat trader. I bought a 20' 1990 stratos fish and ski w/a 175xp and dual axle trailer for 4k, talked him down a few hundred but hey the boat was structually sound just dirty, after some greased lightning looks and runs new.

Re: decent boat for $3000-4000?

Just in a search on iboats.com and usedboats.com turned up several possiblities. I found a decent looking '86 Larson, with a Merc O/B for $3999, as well as a nice Four Winns, and also a 1990 Starcraft. I think you can easily find what your looking for.

Have you thought about a Special interest site, like the classic glastron site? There are boats in your price range that have been immaculately cared for there as well. Just a couple of thoughts for ya.

In this neck of the woods you can find many used boats in that price range. As with all older mechanical things, it will need some TLC to get her up to snuff. This is a great site for the resources necessary to keep her in top-notch condition. You will learn lots about the boat as you go along, I think you appreciate the vessel more when you develop that intimate relationship. New off the showroom boats are usually turn-key, and don't require you to go through your systems and learn anything about the vessel.
