1990 Mercury Force - Flywheel Question

I recently purchased a boat with a 1990 Mercury Force 90HP engine. I have had some real troubles with the engine so far, and have been getting repairs done at a local shop. The most recent issue (so I'm told) is that I need to replace my flywheel, at a cost of about 1000.00

The reason for this repair is because there are some "laminate washers" on the top of the flywheel, which appears to have been whacked with a hammer, causing them to de-laminate, and become out of level. I am told that not replacing my flywheel could cause serious further damage...

I would appreciate other opinions, as to whether or not the new flywheel is required.

Also, if anyone knows a good on-line mercury parts store (new or used), let me know.

Thanks in advance...

If you know your PN, you might want to check out ebay. There are 8 up for bids at the moment.

Someone must have had problems getting the flywheel off last time it was removed. At speeds of over 5500 rpm things could fly off and you have enough velosity to create some serious danger. Ebay is your best choice. Saw one flywheel for a 35 hp chrysler go for around 25 bucks.
