i need some help finding a fuel leak can't tell where it is coming from i took the panels off of<br />motor right above lower unit & can see fuel leaking from bottom of engine the fuel comes out right above the lower unit but there is no fuel <br />present in the motor casing just wonder if this a common problem and if somebody w/ a little mechanical knowledge can fix it also the prop can be wiggled about a quarter of an inch is this normal ? can i buy a shim or is the lower unit worn any help would be greatly appreciated

Hello Sweet 63 and welcome to iboats. On the top portion of the lower unit are two small holes. These are exhaust ports. It is normal for some gas and oil mixture to leak down there especially when trolling or slow speed docking. You could be burning rich which is better then lean. When you are at idle goose the throttle and see what happens. If motor hesitates then goes you are burning lean. If it bogs down and then goes you are burning rich. If it just takes off your mixture is set right. This gas you mentioned is it a frothy white substance? The prop should have play in it. There is about a quarter inch play in the clutch dog to the forward gear. This is normal.

APPRECIATE THE INFO ON THE PROP BUT ON THE FUEL LEAK AS SOON AS I PUMP THE BULB THE FUEL LEAKS OUT ABOUT AS FAST AS I CAN PUMP IT YOU CAN LOOK IN THE EXHAUST PORT & SEE IT RUNNING DOWN ALSO<br />WHAT OIL TO FUEL RATIO DO I USE THE GUY I GOT IT FROM SAID 32:1 BUT THAT IS NOT EVEN LISTED ON THE OIL I GET LAST TIME I WENT IN BETWEEN 40:1 & 25:1<br />BESIDES IT ONLY RAN FOR ABOUT 15 SEC. & THEN DEVELOPED THIS FUEL LEAK THANKS

You have a leak either at the fuel pump, a fuel hose, or the the needle and seat valve in the carb. It could be all of them. You should really change out your fuel pump gasket and diaphragm(inexpensive), fuel hoses and fuel pump vacuum hoses(also inexpensive), and rebuild your carb with an inexpensive carb kit from iboats or NAPA.

Motor should be mixed 50 to 1. Make sure you are using marine oil.

THANKS FOR THE RATIO INFO I WAS GOING TO SEE <br />IF YOU KNOW WHERE THE FUEL PUMP IS EXACTLY<br />SUPPOSEDLY THE CARB HAS ALREADY BEEN REBUILT<br />& DOESNT APPEAR TO BE LEAKING SO I THINK IT <br />PROBABLY IS THE PUMP I HAVE INSTALLED NEW CLAMPS ON THE SUPPLY & FEED LINE IF YOU NEED THE SERIAL #<br />FOR THE MOTOR I WILL REPLY LATER THANKS AGAIN

Could you post the model # of your engine. It should be on a data plate below the carb. Also, if engine hasn't been run in a few years, your oil mix should be 24-1 for the first couple of tanks.

the model # is 55711a & the serial # is 4507<br />it was running at the beginning of the boating season down here in tn but he could not get it running since then i guess about 3 or 4 months <br />the gas smells pretty rotten i cleaned the rust off of the sending unit in the tank & cleaned it <br />out w/ fresh gas but like i said it only ran for a few seconds i think it will run after i get my starter back from o-reilys {same as napa] HAD TO<br />cross refrence the # cost 180.00 that is w/ discount do you think i could have gotten a better<br />deal somewhere else thanks

Hate to tell you this sweet 63 but, there is some guy on ebay selling new Chrysler starters for $130. Been selling them for at least a year. Have you considered buying new fuel tanks. Walmart has them for $13. Fitting could be used from your old tank. Just wrap some teflon tape around the threads. Follow the fuel hose out of the carb and the first component you come to will be the fuel pump. It has about 6 screws on top. Take them off and replace gasket and diaphragm(NAPA).

The fuel pump should be on the rear starboard side of the motor. There is probably a glass bowl on the bottom of it and it is connected directly to the gas tank via a fuel hose. Napa rebuild kit number is 18-7806 and is about 10 bucks. While you are at NAPA you might want to get a glass inline filter. If you dont get all the rust out of that tank the filter will hopefully take it out. Scotianys advise on a plastic tank is a good one. That way you know you have fresh uncontaminated fuel. I would buy a three gallon tank and get an adapter from a merc dealer for seven bucks. If you have an original chrysler gas can you may not be able to take just the adaptor off of it. I know on mine it was connected to the tube that ran to the bottom of the tank.

Hi Sweet 63<br />Just curious, how did you determine your motor was a 1963 model? The first Chrysler badged motors didn't come out until 1965. Maybe there is something I do not understand?

Yeah what Alcan said. Can you reverify that model number. Are you sure it is not 55771. I cant find a 55711A in the history list.

Yeah, the first 55 Chrysler I can find in my book is 1967 . It's a 55771(A). The A being for alternator.

THANKS GUYS I WILL RESEAL THE FUEL PUMP & GO AHEAD & REBUILD THE CARB ALSO JUST FOR MY OWN SATISFACTION I ALREADY HAVE TWO PLASTIC GAS TANKS 6 GALLON SO I THOUGHT JUST CLEANING THEM OUT W/ SOME FRESHGAS & A LITTLE BRAKE CLEAN OR CARB CLEANER WOULD DO THE TRICK WHERE WOULD I PUT THE INLINE FILTER & IS IT GLASS OR CLEAR PLASTIC I AM <br />A TECH AT A GERMAN AUTO DEALER AND THE FILTERS ON OUR DIESELS ARE CLEAR PLASTIC I WAS THINKING I COULD USE ONE OF THOSE THE BOAT MIGHT BE A 65 THAT IS JUST WHAT THE GUY SAID MAYBE A 65 MOTOR ON A 63 BOAT ANYWAYS GREAT FORUM ALSO ARE THE LINES THAT GO FROM PUMP TO CARB ETC JUST NORMAL VACCUM LINES LIKE ON A CAR OR ARE THEY MARINE<br />QUALITY BECAUSE I HAVE ACCESS TO ALL KINDS OF HOSES I JUST DONT WANT TO PUT 15 HOSE CLAMPS ON EVERY LINE I WOULD RATHER JUST GET THE FACTORY KIND OF HOSE OR SOMETHING THAT DOES NOT REQUIRE A CLAMP

For my engine, I just bought regular atomotive fuel hose from NAPA(not the fuel injected hose-expensive). Works fine for me.
