First I must say that after understanding how the forum works and the tips I got from the boaters out there have proven to be very helpful. I was able to troubleshoot, replaced the points, replaced a head gasket. set the timing as humanly close as possible. My motor fired up and runs like a dream. My boat is averaging about 20-21 mph. I have another problem though. After about an hour of the motor running fantastic it starts to miss. A little fluctuation in firing, then a little loss of speed, and it eventually gets very rough and I lose the firing on one cylinder. Can anyone give me any input on what it may be? All I can guess is maybe the engine is overheating and throwing off the ignition. If this is correct, how can I rectify my engine eventually failing? I appreciate all input. Thanks. Phil

Would need to know your model number in order to know what type ignition system you have. If it's magneto, I doubt you have an ignition problem. Can you start your engine by hand without the battery being hooked up? If so, you have magneto ignition . BTW, where did you get your new points? I think a lot of people around here would like to know.

It is a model number 457-HA. It has a magneto. The points were an after market product. I believe they were Sierra points. I found a marine shop where they were very helpful in finding a carb kit, points, head gasket, factory prop. It is called Burchart Marine. Suamico Wisconsin. If you need more info let me know. If you have any ideas about the 45 horse, please let me know. Thanks, Phil

Did you change the fuel pump diaphragm? Another problem I had with my 1970 55hp(magneto) was a plugged up puddle valve. I could put new spark plugs in and after an hour, the lower plug would foul out. They are 2 minature reed valves with tiny screens basically. They drain excess fuel from the combustion chamber when running at low speed. The puddle valve assy. is located under the shift arm. It's secured to the engine by 2 bolts and 2 countersunk screws. Not to hard to remove. Just be careful of the gaskets. You'll probably have to reuse them if you take it apart.
