I just purchased a 1989 125 hp force outboard. My problem is as follows. When the motor was in the water I noticed an oil slick so I checked the lower unit for water and found plenty.I added new gear oil and changed the three plug washers and took the boat out for a spin. I check again for water and the new oil is now a milky white. Also the milky white substance is leaking out of the 8 weep holes. Any ideas?
Thanks Bob

Leakinf from the weep holes where the lower unit meets the midsection??

Sounds like the driveshaft seals or the shift shaft seals.
Might as well do them all while you have it opened up.

Any of the available repair manuals will walk you thru it.

You need to disasemble the lower unit and replace ALL the seals and o-rings...rear bearing carrier seal/o-ring, and the seal/s + 0-rings in the plate that hold the impeller/driveshaft/shift shaft. and whatever others (don't have a manual in front of me, in the shop, but get one and do it yourself-not hard). The seal kit is availble from Mercury Marine

Roscoe and Robby6950
Thanks for the reply. I understand there are special tools required to do this (puller etc) Is this true and do you have any idea where they are available? I also have a fuel problem. The engine will not idle. I had a fuel problem but added a water separator and that seems to have cleared up the fuel but I still cannot idle in neutral or back down on the controls to idle without stalling.I took the engine cover off and it seemed to run ok in neutral but idle was to high.put the engine cover back on and it stalls.

You may have an exhaust leak, in the gasket between the powerhead and the midsection. The exhaust is forced into the engine and it chokes it out. Not all that uncommon, seen it here on the forum several times.

Can't help you much on the tools. My seals can be changed without total disassembly/special tools. I do use a small gear puller though. Available at auto parts stores. Or Mercury Marine dealer.

Think you will need a slide hammer to get the bearing carrier out, but the seals in the top plate that hold the driveshaft seal can be corroded in.....you can do it (per manual). but would not hurt to have a mechanic that knows the LU available

Roscoe,
Forgot to ask. Is repairing the exhaust gasket a monumental task or can the average boat owner do it? Also is the gasket available anywhere. Thanks again
moebob1989
