I got it from the swap and shop for 100.00 got it running in about 30mins barrel fine but when I took it out to the lake it had no power and seemed to heat up quite a bit. What is the gas oil mix? The impellor seemed to be in good shape could there be some thing blocking the water flow it seems to let water out fine. Also it didn’t want to go into reverse at all is that a turnbuckle adjustment...

Re: 20HP CHRYSLER PROBLEMS

Welcome to the iboats forum!

Have you actually pulled the lower unit for checking the impeller? How's the thermostat, if you have one? Have you flushed the cooling system? Some things to check: new gas? no water in gas? plugged fuel filter? choke working fine? good spark? good plugs? clean carburetor? open vent on gas tank? correct carburetor air/fuel mixture setting? and not the least, good compression? Good luck.

Re: 20HP CHRYSLER PROBLEMS

Again, welome to iboats

1. you need to post the model number and serial
numbers so someone will be able to give the
year and model of your engine
2. you need to get a service manual, and a parts
catalog (a must) using the info

I sure someone then at Iboats will be more than happy to help with your questions. You sound like you are somewhat mechanicaly minded,if so the Chysler outboards are simple but sometimes tempermental.
If you are going to do the repair work yourself, the manual and parts book will be gold to you.

Hi Dan
As Brownwater said we need a model #, so we can give correct info. If your motor does not have a T-stat installed it should. The T-stat cover is located at the top back side of the head.

Re: 20HP CHRYSLER PROBLEMS

Chrysler 20's before 1979 didn't come with a thermostat.

You should check that the water pump grommet fitting snuggly with the water pipe.

Fuel oil ratio is 50 to 1 (50 parts of fuel to 1 part of oil), 8 onces per 6 gallons of regular unleaded fuel.

Lacking of power could be that the carburettor is out of synch with the stator advance.

Re: 20HP CHRYSLER PROBLEMS

Correction to rbruce63 post above:

50:1 ratio is correct, but that would be 16 ounces of oil per 6 gallons of gas.

Or 2.6 ounces per gallon

Re: 20HP CHRYSLER PROBLEMS

Roscoe:

You are correct. 50:1 means 2% oil to fuel. In 6 gallons of fuel there are 128 ounces 2% is 2.56 ounces per gallon of fuel.

The model number and serial number of a Chrysler 20 is located in a plackard on the starboard side of the motor on the base of the motor.

Re: 20HP CHRYSLER PROBLEMS

thanks guys I found out one of the big problems was the where the water tube goes into the rubberon the pump housing. It went in a bit of an angle and the tube ate a part of the rubber and cloged the tube. We rebuilt the carb today also, so she should be running soon... I found a service manual today and was wondering is 40.00 to much to pay for an impeller??????????

Seems pretty pricy however with out your model number it is hard to say. Two different impellers show. F436065 and F458065-1 for chrysler 20 HP. My guess is you need a 8903 impeller which sells for about 12 bucks. As other people here are trying to tell you POST YOUR MODEL NUMBER

Re: 20HP CHRYSLER PROBLEMS

hi,

check the compression before you go too far down the road of doing "tune up" things. Maybe it has more serious problems (a bad piston/rings). They can start up and run surprisingly well on 1 cylinder. It's only under load where they fall on their face.

If it was run much with a clogged water pump, it could have a scored cylinder (might have happened before you got it). If compression is OK on both, then continue troubleshooting/fixing.

good luck.

Re: 20HP CHRYSLER PROBLEMS

The grommet should be replaced and the cost of the impeller seems correct to me as I paid $35 for a 10 bladed impeller. There is a least expensive impeller at $17 but it is 5 bladed and you might find it still at a Mercury dealer. There is no difference in the performance of the two impellers.

Re: 20HP CHRYSLER PROBLEMS

I shopped around and 40 seemed ok. I replaced the grommet and the shift lever grommet. I need to get the top half put together and start her up!
