How many poles does my outboard have ?? Its a 3-cylinder 2 stroke engine.

Many thanks
Steve

You need a 20 pole tach. I installed one on my 89 85 hp force.

Is the Capri pre-wired for a tach. I picked up the teleflex 20 pole one and tested it by connecting it to the tach connection on the 85 force OB. Seems to work. Don't want to run a wire from the OB to the Capri dash. Saw 2 unused wires in the dash area?

Thanks.

Kem

MY 1988 had a PURPLE wire labeled TACH on the motor and there was a free PURPLE wire under my dash I assumed was Tach. I guessed right.

Admiral,

Mine has the purple on the motor but can't find the other end in the dash. However, there are two free wires near rhe starter switch, not purple.

Have you installed a temp. gauge? If so is there a wire for it?

Thanks.

Kem

Why you need a temp guage? The warning buzzer is a way better system. You can hear the buzzer as soon as it goes off, rather than watch the guage and notice too late the motors hot!

Best bet is to get a long wire and test either wire you want to use for continuety between the purle on the motor and the loose wires.

I've got the same setup (1987 85hp) and I'm also looking at picking up a tach.

When wiring, I understand the purple wire which leads from the motor to the dash... but what about the other wire? Is the other wire simply a ground?

Thanks!

I have no idea what the other wire is for however test the overheat buzzer per instruction in a manual or do a search just to be sure it works. If you do have continuity from the engine tach and the other wire you should attach this to the signal on the tach. Good luck.

Check Ebay for tachometers. I just bought a brand new one for $38 shipped to my door and it works great. He might have more.
