Just bought a 1969 Chrysler Fury 16Ft with a 55HP Chrysler Outboard. I stuck it in a barrel to test it out and it runs good at starting position but dies at idle. Once in awhile it will run ok for a few but starts backfiring thru the carb and dies. I can't get it to stay running long enough to shift or if it does manage to shift, that kills it.

First thing, make sure flywheel key isn't sheared. Next, I'd go with rebuilding the fuel pump and after that, I'd rebuild the Tillotson WB carb on your motor. If the key is okay, then your looking at less than $30 for parts kits for the pump and carb . The kits come with good instructions too. iboats may have these kits but, if not, NAPA has them.

iboats is out of stock on the fuel pump kits, can you tell me the NAPA# for it or can they cross the # from here 18-7806.
Also I have a Model 5575 SN 1710. Can anyone tell me the year?
Is there an easy way to check the fuel line for air leaks? could it be sucking air?

The carb kit is NAPA 18-7037. Also, you might want just go ahead and change all your fuel hoses. NAPA has the hose and it's inexpensive. Get about 10 ft. You'll just have to cut it to proper length yourself. Next time you go to NAPA, ask to see their marine catalog. That will get you the fuel pump part no. I'm not sure what it is or I'd post it here. But that no. you have looks very familiar as far as NAPA. It's about $7.

fuel pump number is 18-7806. NAPA sells them for 9 bucks. You may want to replace the fuel seats as well. They cost about 4 bucks each and the gaskets are 50 cents each. Mercury sells them. Also the motor is a 1969

Re: 1969 Chrysler 55HP

Thanks for all your help, I rebuilt the Carb and the fuel pump, put new fuel line on it and changed the plugs. engine purrs like a kitten.
I have one further question.
I had trouble shifting into forward. seemed to shift into reverse OK. I drained the lower end and refilled with new GO. That seemed to solve that problem. However there are two small holes right above the bottom fill hole on the right side. What are they for? When I lift the engine out of the water they drain what looks like oily water.

That drainage is normal. What you are seeing is unburned gas and water draining out of the middle leg. Those holes are isolated from the area where the gear oil goes.

If you didn't see drainage from those 2 holes, then you would have problems. Glad to hear your motor is running well.

I checked the NAPA warehouse in Columbia, S.C. for a 18-7806 fuel pump kit.
They couldn't find it in their catalog or database. Maybe your area still has it .

If anyone can have bad luck, it Will be me.

I ordered one from iboats.com yesterday The price including shipping to S.C. is $16.02. Please support iboats as much as possible.
