My tilt/trim simply clicks when I engage it. It will stair step down or up but is getting worse. Do I need to replace the whole unit or is there some maintenance that can be done?

Does the motor start and stop while it is clicking?
Or does the motor run continuously but it moves up intermittantly?
Have you checked the fluid level?
It may just need to be filled.

Refill with the same kind of fluid that is in there now.
If it is transmission oil, use that.
If it looks like motor oil, use that.

The motor stops and then starts. It does not run continuously. In fact, sometimes it won't do anything at all. I opened the fluid reservoir and fluid came out (about 1/8 cup). It looks like transmission fluid.

If motor is starting and stopping, your problem is electrical.
Since it happens in both the up and down direction, I would first look to the wiring to the switch , or the switch itself, or a loose wire connection somewhere in the system.

If you want to test the motor and hydrolic system, you can easily do that.
The motor on that system should have just two wires connected to it with small plugin type connectors. One of these connectors may be loose. Make sure they are connected, then try to raise the motor.

If this doesn't work,
Unplug them.
Connect them to a set of jumper cables.
Then connect the jumper cables to the battery terminals.
Some sparks may fly when you touch the cables to the terminals.
The motor should run steady, and the engine should rise or lower.
If you reverse the cables on the battery, the motor should run in the other direction.
_______________________________

If by chance your trim motor has 3 wires, connect the negative jumper cable to the black one. Connecting the positive cable to the green wire should lower the engine. Connecting the positive cable to the blue wire should raise the engine.

______________________________

If the motor runs properly with the jumper cables, then the problem is in the wiring.

If the motor does not run continuously, your problem is in the trim motor.

Since you are having trouble both raising and lowering the engine, I would doubt that it is a problem with the relays, and would concentrate on a loose wire or a bad thumb switch.

Let us know what you find.

Roscoe, you pegged it right! I took apart the tilt/trim motor connectors and attached it to the battery and it worked. I then cleaned all the connections and it operates perfectly...thanks!
