Recent carbs cleaned, exhaust gaskets replaced, new plugs,, starts quick and runs smooth most of the time.. from 5 to 20 mins runs and will just stop, from idle to high rpm.. will start right up and run smooth and just quit.. even with gas tank cap off.. primer bulb is not firm, should it be.Has my mechanic stumped for now...

Primer bulb should pump up firm, and stay semi firm while in use.

It should not get sucked in or flat.

Might also want to check for loose wiring in the kill switch.

Tried all that, still will just quit like turning off ignition, had new stator last year.. could it be a heat problem in the control unit???

Might try rebuilding the fuel pump.
Only costs $12 and takes about 20 minutes.

Thanks, but if it is a fuel problem, would it just quit outright without boging down, and start right up again?

I remember reading some older posts in the mercury section. It ended up being defective coils. The coils would run fine till motor got warmed up and then would crap out. I know merc had a bad time with their coils. I would do the fuel pump first. It is cheap and easy to do. You also may want to replace the fuel bulb. Even if it is new it could be defective. Check the rubber oring at the quick disconnect to verify that there is no air leaking there.

So when it dies, how long till it will restart?
