How to interpret the chrysler model numbers? Foe example I have a 457HF. I understand that the first two mean it's a 45 hp. What about the rest, and what are the differences of , oh, say a 458Hf, or a 459 HB?

Whay can't that guide be in English. Sure you can read the tables but it would be nice to explore that site!

It could be in English, Realgun. They thought it more appropriate to use their native language.<br /><br />Would you set up a website here in Swedish? :)

Chrysler model numbers do not follow any pattern other then the first digets represent the horse power. There are a few places on the internet to find the year after 1974. When the model is earlier than that you need a chart that is printed in certian manuals.

Generally speaking, it looks like the first 2 digita are the horse power, and the last 2 digits are the year model. Could it be the middle number is the type of ignition system? Anybody got a 458 h? or 459h? and what type ignition do you have?

Re: Does anybody know.....

Hi Jcrain<br />I am sure there is some rhyme and reason to Chrysler model #s. The only thing I am sure of is the first letter is for origin of manufacture. The "H" is for Hartford Wisconsin, the "B" is for Barrie Ontario. To try and make general statments about this subject could be misleading. Chrysler ran some model#s for several years, in this case the ser# is used to determine year of manufacture. Some 45hp motors for example have model#s that begin with "46". Model# 464HA beginning at ser#1001 would be a 1973 45hp sport & S/S electric. As you know differences involve things as shaft length, M.T. (manual tiller), type of ignition system, type of charging system (if any) type of starting system (electric etc). I have not seen an on-line site yet that posts a complete list of all Chrysler model numbers. Your model#458HF has an alt, with C.D. ignit. The difference between the 458HF and the 459HF is shaft length. I did not find a 459HB. The difference between 459HF and 459BF is origin of manufacture. These models ran from 1975 to 1977, I would need a ser# to date the exact year.

Oh well, it was a thought. I sometime find it hard to find parts when online or evan at a parts house because the 457HF is not listed most of the times.

Re: Does anybody know.....

If I am figuring my info correctly. 45=hp.7= long shaft,e start, with alternator.HF is a production code used from 1970 on HF=1974 USA.<br />It appears HA=USA 1970 HB=USA 1971 And so on but no HE code??<br /> Manual isnt real clear about what year.It appears a 1974 458HF would be 45=hp,8=standard shaft, elec start w alternator and magnapower ignition.HF=1974 USA. USA codes begin with H Canada begins with B<br />Chart is actually kind of confusing.<br /> Motors previous to 70 have no letter code only numbers.<br /> My asumption is 457=67 45hp.thus followed with 2 numbers the first is the variation (long shaft etc.second is production code 2,4,6 is USA 1,3,5<br /> Canada.
