I have a Force 120. I was running along with no problem, then I noticed a small vibrating noise coming from the lower unit (I Think??) that suddenly got louder then the motor stopped and will not restart. I can free spin the prop. Any chance, it's the Shear Pin or am I in for something a lot worse?

HI Tim
Can you post the model# of your motor? You say the motor won't start. Will it turn over? By hand? Can you shift the L/U? Did you drain the l/u oil? I do not think this is a shear pin problem or a spun hub. Need more info.

tim'sboat,

Doesn't sound good to me,wish I had better news.I think a bearing on the driveshaft may have frozen, stopping the engine.

Normal trouble shoot ideas: pull the motor cover off,and see if you can turn the flywheel by hand.If not, drop the lower unit. Now if you can turn the flywheel, the problem is in the gearcase. If you still can't turn the flywheel, you have problems in the powerhead itself.

Keep us posted on this,please.

DHP

The model # is H-120422UD (1997 Force 120 HP O/B.
While it is neutral, the starter will engage the flywheel, but will not turn it (click then stop). I can shift into gear and the prop still free spins (someone told me to check this). I cannot turn the flywheel by hand other than a little slack. I'm brand new to the boating bit, so I'm not sure how to drop the L/U. I have not drained the L/U oil.

Thanks,
Tim

try removing the spark plugs and disconnect the battery. This should give you less compression for turning the flywheel. Make sure you only turn the flywheel clockwise. If you are going to remove the lower unit you should get yourself a service manual. It can be described here but the process is a lot easier when you have pictures in front of you.
