is the a web site that lists what all the numbers and letters mean in the model and serial #ers? I was curious if the broke down just like car #ers go. I have a 83 75hp(I think) model is 758H3F wondering if the "H" and the "F" stood for something and the serial # is 1496 is that just a production # ? thanks :)

Re: model number and serial number decode

I think you may be right on the serial number being the production number but the model numbers change with age on these Chryslers.
For instance I have a model 7071 Chrysler, which from what I can tell was made in 1969, I also have a 457H9K, which is a 1979 model. I think the H and K must describe who was the maker of various ignition systems. I dont knopw if this will help any, but I wanted to add my two cents worth. :)

Hi Fishkiller
You do indeed have a 1983 model. The first "H" in the model # stands for Hartford Wi. This means made in U.S.A. The rest refer to shaft length, ignit system type, electric start, charging system, etc. One can not use Chrysler model #s alone to determine year of manufacture all the time. Some times Chrysler ran the same models and mod.#s for three years or more. In this case we need the serial # as well as the mod#. An example would be 756HA begining with ser#1001 is a 1974. Ser# begining 2001 a 1975,Ser# begining 3065 a 1976 and so on. Some times this Chrysler system can be confusing. The O-line lists that I've seen (while helpful and close enough to order parts) are not complete, they do not list all the models nor all the years. They simply list mod756HA as being a 1974 model and leave it at that. As I say close enough.

Close enough is right. If they have the same model number, they use the same parts. About the only differences might be decals. But that's fairly common even between model numbers of the same horsepower. Chryslers didn't change terribly often unlike Mercury who had frequent changes, often within a given model year.

Hi Jcrain
Here is an interesting note for you. My OEM year model guide lists your 457HF as a 1973 model w\alt. and long shaft. The interesting part is they start with ser#4001. There are earlier 457 models going back to 1967, but no "F". As for you, when ordering parts. It is important for you to know the type of ignition system on your motor, the type of charging system, the type of starting system and probably wether it is long or short shaft, if those parts are concerned. There were seven (so called different) models for 1973. Let's say half were made in Canada, denoted by the first "B" in the mod# (i.e.457BF) and half were long shaft (457HF-457BF) (Short 456HF-456BF)you can see this gives Four model#s for the same basic unit depending on shaft length. Now, times that by seven major categories, this will give us at least 28 different model#s for 1973 (give or take) depending on how the unit is equipt.
