we have taken this motor completely apart following the water flow thinking it was clogged up, it is very clean, the impeller looks new but buddies say the splines felt weak to them, we get no water to the head, could it be a head gasket, we also took the thermostat out to insure water flow, it seems we are not getting water from the pump any idea's Thanks

The vanes should be rather flexible. What you don't want is stiff or permanently bent. Make sure the pump is engaging the pipe and make sure the pipe is in the grommet under the powerhead. The only other thing that comes to mind is pump housing wear. Look at the top. It should be flat. After time, impellers eat a groove in the housing which greatly reduces it's efficiency. I doubt it's a head gasket, but never say "Never". :)

If you have the type of impeller that has what looks like a hex brass center verify the glue that connects to the rubber has not gone bad. I had this happen on a new impeller and the brass insert spun inside the impeller but the impeller would not spin. Also make sure the impeller pin is in the drive shaft and the impeller is mounted on it.

What eurolarva said. The impeller should not spin on the driveshaft.

euro it looks like i might be getting that same motor ,when you go to that sight it lists "alot" of parts as unavailable. Are parts really hard to find for that yr. force? and is it a decent motor?

thnx
mark

Parts can be found on the internet and on ebay. If the merc site says they no longer carry it copy the number down and do an internet search for the part number. There are alot of other places that sell aftermarket parts. Most of the wear parts that you need are still availible. There are always parts to be found on ebay..

Procraftmark, I owned a 50hp force. it ran and did not strand me, but it was tempermental. Given the choice I would buy something else. A number of people will give you the good and bad of it, but in my experience I felt it was a weak motor. It smoked bad and smelled. It is not uncommon to have faulty CDI modules, head gaskets, starters, stators, etc.. I knew a guy who had the exhaust problem listed above and he could not get rid of it. He ended up trading the motor. You will find that most rigs with a Force hanging off the back will be significantly cheaper than rigs with a merc or ev/john on the back. When I sold my boat with Force on it I would have people walk up and not look any farther. All they had to see wass the Force and they kept walking.

They have a rep. Some earned, some not. If you want to enjoy trouble free boating this may not be the package for you. It very well may prove to be trouble free. If so you got lucky..
