Just bought a boat that came with a 1984 50hp Force. I have no spark in either cylinder. Anyone have any ideas where to start?? I changed plugs so far....

Also, anyone have a better price on coils...One is cracked, a replacement is $115....OUCH!!

Thanks.

Re: No Spark.....

Check to see if the motor has an active lanyard switch. IF it has a lanyard switch and it is not plugged in the motor will not get a spark

Re: No Spark.....

If the motor has sat for awhile it also could be the points, which are located under the flywheel, I think. Just because one of the coils are cracked, does not make it bad, I had a 79 chrysler 45 that both coils had cracks in them. I just filled the cracks with liquid electrical tape. Motor ran fine. I used a harmonic balancer puller to get the flywheel off, if you decide to try this yourself make sure you get a manual and follow lapping procedure and torque specs., to the tee. You dont want that flywheel coming loose at 5500 rpms.

Re: No Spark.....

Well I am new to working on these but this is what I have learned thus far:

1. If you have no spark get a manual.
2. Reference to my manual says disconnect the blue stator wires at terminal block. Set multimenter to 400DVA; crank the engine and should get 300 volts or more if it is intermittent replace the stator.

3. The schematic is rather simple on it..check all your connections on the terminal board for loose or corroded wires.

4. Like eruo mentioned check your shorting switch..

5. If your connections from the stator or trigger are plug in take them apart and look for corrosion or shorted pins.

I am a proud owner of an 85/86 85HP cross breed due to mid year changes. I had to have the manual to make sense of the outboard and electrical system.
www.outboardparts.com carry alot of force OE stuff as well as have a good online troublshooting procedures to follow if you dont have a manual right away.
Good Luck..

Re: No Spark.....

Thanks guys - I just ordered a manual for it. I will start checking everything very soon. If I ever figure it out, I'll report back about what I found.

One more question though. If I end up needing to pull the flywheel off....what will I need to do that??

Harmonlc balancer with a big wrench. You will need a torque wrench when you put it back together.
