I recently purchased a 1989 bayliner capri 1 owner who took excellent care of the boat. It had been in storage for about 2 years. However, there is no reverse. I took it to a local service center and was told it needed a new lower unit. I bought a rebuilt unit and installed it according to the force service manual and i still have no reverse. As i was testing the unit, a buzzer sounded from underneath the dash. Each time you turn the ignition it buzzes! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

No expert here, but a few things to look at.

Buzzer could be sounding because the overheat temp sensor is faulty or the wiring is damaged.
May aslo be related to the neutral interlock switch.

No Reverse, could be a shift rod adjustment that is out of wack.

I had an L drive at one time. Look on the drive and you'll see where the shift cable attaches to the drive lever.

With someone in the cockpit and the engine OFF, have the person shift the boat into reverse and see if you can see if the shift cable is moving that shift lever.

What happened on mine was the cable would come loose and I'd get one get or the other...or just neutral.

It could be that the cable is not engaging the shift lever properly...or it could be something internal to the drive...hope not.

Hope this helps.

Hope this helps. The buzzer is most likely a wiring issue. The under the dash senser is the alert for the overheating of the engine. Since this happens immediatley its probably a wiring issue or a bad senser. As far as no reverse its highly unlikely the oraginal lower unit and the one you recently installed were both bad. Check the cables as Baldguy discribed.
