Re: 1990 50 hp Force...problem

I worked the throttle cable senario in the barrell here in the yard.Looked into carb while my wife worked the stick and the inner flapper was closing and opening with control movements.
This was the first test. After this I moved the throttle by hand, noticing no difference from the control operation. D-day is approaching and this little motor will run!!
Something in the carb for sure, but I will have extra hands on the lake this time, one to stear and one to work the throttle by hand. This will tell the tale. I will keep ya"all posted.
Thanks...jas...petey

Just making sure of the carb kit is correct, my serial number for the motor is so wore out you cant read it except for the last numbers 22530.
I just checked the numbers off the carb...
TC 102A924 ON ONE SIDE, 718061 ON THE OTHER SIDE.
Merc dealer out at Toledo Bend looked up the carb kits for 1990 50 hp and there is nearly 20 different model numbers for this motor.
They cant order it without knowing which model it is or the numbers off the carb.
Maybe these numbers I have given will help.
D-day is in the morning on the lake, if no result then its time for the kit....
Thanks for any help....
Jas....petey.

Re: 1990 50 hp Force...problem

Update, Just got back from lake, and same results.
Had my mechanic with me operating carb by hand.
Still no power beyond half throttle. Prior to going out we checked and cleaned carb, Jets needles, gaskets all good. My mechanic says electrical....plently of fuel going into carb, checked diaphram, good, fuel pump good, just wont go past half throttle. He also said may be coil malfunction but cant be sure , these tested ok during electrical test.
I am at the end of the rope, and was recommended to scrap or sell this nightmare. This motor is very clean and looks brand new, but considering selling to any intersted Force enthusiast.
Thanks for all the help fellas!!
I am now looking for a new motor because I am tired of working on this motor.
Complete package...tilt trim and controls...best offer!!
jas....petey.. :(

Petey. One last thing. Make sure you have spark at both cylinders. I just went through the same type of agony with my '88 Force 50 and discovered the wire from stator to Coil pack had broken off at the terminal strip. I re-attached it, took the boat to the lake, and it damn near threw me out when I hit WOT. Amazing how well those things run when both cylinders are firing.

Thanks for the reply, Doc....I am taking the motor to the shop for a check. I looked at the terminal strip and every wire is connected. I will have the mechanic check out all the other leads from the stator to coil pack to strip.
This sounds like a logical culprit and lord knows I have tried everything.
My backyard mechanic is insisting that it is electrical at this point, and your diagnosis may be the cure. We will give it a try this week.

Thanks again...
Jas....petey ;)

An easy check would be to remove the plugs one at a time and with the plug wire attached crank the engine while grounding the base of the plug to the powerhead. Do this in dim light (garage, or at dusk). Note if you see saprk or not with each plug. That will at least narrow it to one cylinder. Switch plugs between cylinders to see if that makes a difference. Could be as simple as a bad plug. By the way, wear heavy gloves or use a dry rag to hold plugs while testing, that current has a nasty bite!

I Will try this tonight, I did this once already, but I will do it again just to be sure.
I am taking this motor to Carlsons Marine up near Hemphill Texas. The guy who I talked to last week is highly recommended by the guides I know at Toledo Bend.
I figure its still going to be cheaper to repair this motor than to go out and buy a new one.
Most all my friends recommend using this for a anchor, saying it will keep breaking down.
Thanks....jas....petey....

Well seems like all the local boat repair shops are afraid of this motor. If it was a Merc Force, no problem. But US Marine scares all the local mechanics...I wonder why...."WE DONT WORK ON THAT TYPE"
Still no progress in this dilema....till I get time.
jas....petey
