What color is the smoke? Was the motor winterized with fogging oil before it was stored?

What exactly do you mean by too much? I have a 1974 75 hp chrysler and mine smokes a decent amount at idle. Does it run ok?

I agree with scotiany. Are plugs clean and shiney or do they have grit on them. Grit is good shiney is bad. You could have a bad head gasket. You should check the compression on the motor.

Thanx all
The plugs are wet and black, looks to rich, but have the air screw as lean as it will idle stable. Not quite one turn out from lightly seated . The fuel oil i measured and re measured, that i think is ok . The engine seems to run ok on the water just smokes from what i think might be a over rich mixture, could the float level be to high and flooding it at idle.?

Where is the smoke coming from? The water outlet, or from the exhaust under the water? How cold is the water your running in. I have owned two chryslers and the plugs are always black when i pulled them. maybe not very wet.

Other possibilities is a week spark. How does the motor run in spite of the smoke. If you gun the throttle from idle will she go right away or hesitate or die? Correct mix would be 2.6 oz of outboard motor oil to 1 gallon of gas. Your mixture adjust screws sounds about right. About 1 turn out for lightly seated is about optimum. Another thing you can check is the puddle valves or the recirulation system. Are you seeing any gas trails in the water?

Re: CRYSLER 75 SMOKING

Hi Eurolarva
Thanx for in put, If i take the pipe off the plate down the side of starboard side that the excess fuel recirculates it kind of spits out little droplets, i mean to take if off and check the screens in there to see if any are blocked. I think there might be a little gas trail in the water ,in a harbour and a dirty one at that so quite a bit of diesel on the water.
The motor will jump up and want to go if you put the hammer down, mixture i think is ok,and spark ,on ething i have not done yet is a compression test this should be at about 145 ?
Cheers

Hi
Have done the compression test and it was 135 with out WOT and 152-4 with WOT, this is ok i guess.advanced the timming a little and seems to run with less smoke ,maybe just wishfull thinking.
