Tightening up the exhaust leg on '86 Force 50

A puddle of black oil collects under the cowling aft of this motor. I suspect gasket between upper and lower motor (exhaust manifold?) is leaking.

I thought I'll just crank those 6 little bolts down a bit to see if they're loose. (Separating upper and lower engine is a lot of work!) But they are an odd star-shaped head..

Can someone enlighten me what the proper term for those bolts are and whether this is a potential source of the problem? Where do I get a star-shaped socket for my torque wrench? I've heard others with pooling oil in the cowling... where does it come from usually?

Thanks! Rodbolt, I'll bet you know the answer!

Bioman

Hey Rodbolt! Eurolarva! Where are you guys?
I sat up with the Clymer's manual last night... and they don't seem to have a discussion of separating this part. They mention 9 bolts holding top to bottom, but no mention of if these are 12-point torx or what. And no exploded diagram either...
Suppose that's a reflection on the quality of the Clymer's....
Bioman

The exhaust exits behind the side plate. Check for the proper torque on the sideplate bolts. That is the cover under the label that identifies the wiring. There is a gasket, a baffle, a second gasket and then the cover sandwiched together.

The star shaped heads are torx.

Thanks LI Chuck,
I'll check those bolts.. since the symptom is oil under the back of the engine, under hte cowling... maybe I'm looking in the wrong place? Might be some kind of upper leg lower leg gasket?
Bioman

My guess would be the screws you are describing are Torx. My chrysler has standard heads on them. If it is anything like a chrysler the hidden screws are near the air baffle under the carb. There were two on my chrysler. My guess is when and if you remove the powerhead you are going to see the gaskets above and below the adaptor plate(not sure the term for force. It is called a kingpin plate on my chrysler) have turned to mush. My guess is the the fuel recirculation system is not working on your motor. Old chryslers didnt even recycle the condensed gas instead a fuel hose went to each cylinder and drained the unburned gas to the kingpin plate and rotted the hell out of the gaskets. I re hosed mine with a hose going out the back of the motor connected to a small plastic bottle so this gas dont collect in the bottom of the head or drain into the lake. I would check your puddle valve or recirculation system and see if the screens are plugged. Pulling the head sucks. Especially if the the gasket sealer was permanant. Took me all weekend to scrape that crap off.

Thanks Euro. I'll work on the recirc system first... Yes, the 86 Force has a couple recirc hoses and I think a flapper valve of some kind...I don't want to pull the head... really..
Does puddled gas look like black gooky oil? That's whats collecting in the back.
Bioman

Yes black gooky works for me. The little plastic bottle I have collecting this stuff is black in appearance. Really looks nasty when it hits the lake. The stuff spreads like crazy. If you remove the head I may have a couple of lower gaskets. When I bought the kit it was a generic kit and I believe two of them were force gaskets instead of chrysler. If you get to that point let me know and I will look up the gasket kit for your motor. If they are the same ones I have left from my kit I will mail them to you free of charge. I have no need for them and would rather give them to someone who can use them.

You can actually use a 12 point socket of the proper size on those torxbolts. I did when I couldn't find an official torx socket.
