I HAVE A COOLING PROBLEM THAT IS DRIVING ME NUTS.FIRST OFF I HAVE REPLACED THE WATER PUMP AND THERMOSTAT AND CHECKED FOR OBSTRUCTIONS AS BEST I COULD.THE BOAT WILL IDLE ALL DAY EVEN AT A HIGH RPM WITHOUT OVERHEATING, BUT AS SOON AS I PUT IN DRIVE AND ACCELERATE IT WILL STOP PUMPING WATER AND THE BUZZER GOES OFF AND NOTHING BUT STEAM IS COMMING OUT OF THE HOLES. THATS IT IN A NUTSHELL.....HOPE SOMEONE CAN HELP....TOMBSTONE11

Sure sounds like an old worn out impeller, but you just changed that.

I would remove the lower unit and make sure you are getting the water tube properly connected when installing the lower unit.

Are the water intakes remaining below the water surface when you speed up? Do you have a short shaft motor on a 20" transom?

Re: 1989 FORCE 50

Thanks for the quick reply.Ihave checked all those things and as I said it pumps water really good at idle, it's only when I accelerate that it totally stops pumping water.I'm wondering if I possibly missed something like mabe a wrong water pump? I just don't know.......tombstone11

Tombstone:
Are you sure that when you put the new impeller in that all the vanes are bent in the right direction? Is it possible that you turned the driveshaft counter clockwise? That would reverse the bend or the vanes and prevent proper operation. Also, make sure you installed the impeller with the correct side up. The impeller should slide on the driveshaft above the key and then be pushed down over the key itself.
Hope this helps.

Hello tombstone, does the new impeller have the same number of vanes as the old one ? If your new impeller has more vanes that will allow less water volume being pumped.

I have also heard of impellers coming loose from center insert, you might check that.

I think it is possible to install the t-stat backwards on this model. That would produce a symptom like that.
The impeller has to be ok, as they usually fail at idle first, as opposed to at speed, like yours is.

Remove the t-stat for the purpose of testing, just to see if the problem goes away. But don't run it more than an hour without one.
Also, running it briefly without the t-stat will allow any solids in the cooling system to better be flushed-out.
Also, if the previous impeller grenaded, pieces of it could possibly be lodged in the knooks and crannies of your cooling circuit. The temporary removal of the t-stat might allow them top pass thru.

Re: 1989 FORCE 50

Greetings....Now I have something to work with. I don't think the t-stat is backward but I will look and try to run it without one. I do know that the old impeller did come apart and then I replaced it.Iam positive it is properly installed and the vane count is the same.It also looked identical to the others in the past as I have replaced it lots of times. So thanks and I will let you know the next time I take it out...Tombstone

Did you find all of the pieces of the old impeller? If not there may be pieces cloging the thermostat or other coolant passages.
