I have a 1988 85 hp force. The family had it out over the weekend and it got hot and stalled on them. I replaced the waterpump took it out to the lake had trouble starting it.Once running it had no power. Took it back hame and had water in bottom cylinder. Pulled the head off and I have a blown gasket. Here is my Problem. the casting around the cylinder sleeve has a peice missing. It looks like is has been that way for a while. will a new gasket seal and what should I do?

Looks like the gasket will seal. I think the metal ring in gasket seals on the cylinder wall and not the casting. I was told to put 'pig putty' (KINDA LIKE JB WELD)and fill in the area that is chipped out and sand it smooth. Is this a good Idea or is there a better fix?

Looks like you have cylinder damage caused by broken or melted ring. You can try putting on a new gasket, but it may not last very long. The question is how long before you permanently thrash this motor? I'd start looking for another motor if I were you.

If you use anything as a patch, make sure it will hold up to high temps. I'm not sure if JBweld will do it or not.

A new gasket would cost you about 35.00, If welded it will be weak and you will have problems working it down without getting any crap into the cylinders. That is cast aluminmum with a steel sleeve. If you throw a new gasket in the motor and try to run it, make sure you find out why it overheated and fix that.

Re: in need of advice

The reason it overheated was the inpeller was shot. I replaced the whole water pump. Then went to the lake to test run it. started and ran but had no power. pulled head and found the problem with gasket. <br /> So would you suggest using a JB weld type product insted of having it welded??

heres the news... I picked up new gasket, cleaned everything up, installed it and hit the lake for a test run. Ran a tank of gas through it and it is running GREAT. We even pulled a tuber behind her and all is working good. :) :D

congrats!! Glad to hear you didn't have serious problems -- Did you wind up getting it welded or did you just put on the head and go for it
