I need to purchase a new prop for my engine, and need a little help. This is the first force engine Ive owned, so Im not used to the different exhaust exit (not exiting the prop). The prop I have on there has already been rebuilt in the past, and I would rather just look into buying a new one.
Its a 13 1/4 x 17. My boat is a 1987 bayliner capri 17ft, and at WOT, trimmed out, Im running about 4900-5000 RPM's.
Do I have to buy a special prop because of the exhaust design, or will a standard prop work with just adding the spacers and washers that came off of mine. My prop has the large plastic cap that goes on after you install the prop, but the prop is solid where it covers it at. Will a through hub exhaust prop work on this also.

Sounds like the prop you have now has your engine running in the right rpm. I would get the same size and pitch, perhaps a Michigan prop from right here in iboats mall.

Some people have used thru hub props, with limited success.
But why not just buy the prop that is made for your motor?

http://www.boat-props.com/finder.cg...n-Standard/horsepower-85/year-1987/index.html

To be honest, I would rather pay less for a used prop in good shape. Thats why I was wondering if a through hub exhaust would work, so I could start looking for a used prop. I figure if I have to, I can have mine rebuilt, but it looks like whoever fixed it before did a poor job. I hit a pretty large stick floating in the water, and it bent and cracked one blade.
I didnt think a stick would do that much damage, but it looks like there may have been a weak spot on that blade.
I also would rather spend less on a used prop, because the lake I go to sometimes has alot of garbage floating(sticks, bottles, rubbish, etc..) when the lake level rises. You can easily run up on an area where its unavoidable hitting things. All you can do is try and avoid any large wood chunks, sticks, and watch for the dreaded ice bags.

A non thru hub will work just fine. I have the Hustler prop and it does very well. Pushes the boat to about 30+ mph and getting a slip of between 7.7% and 11%. It does not blow out in turns either.

I take it you mean a thru hub will work. My motor calls for a non thru hub(exhaust exits above the prop instead of thru it), which is what I have. I was hoping to be able to use a thru hub prop since there easier to find used. Right now it cruises nice at 36MPH at 4600RPM's, and if I push it to 5000-5100, I can get about 40MPH out of it. I definitely dont want to lose any speed. I will probably just break down and drop the cash for a new one, then have mine rebuilt for a spare.
